The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team played a road CUNYAC match at Lehman College in the Bronx, NY, on Tuesday, March 5.
The Cougars (10-0, 3-0 CUNYAC) defeated the Lightning (3-10, 0-3) in straight sets (25-23, 25-14, 26-24). MEC
is now the ONLY unbeaten team remaining in NCAA DIvision III this season.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair, with the Lightning shocking MEC by using a 5-0 run midway through the set to take a surprising 17-14 lead. Lehman held the advantage until it was 22-20, when the Cougars clawed back with a 5-1 run to finish off the first set.
The second set was relatively close at 16-12 Medgar before
Nius St. Clair,
Enmanuel Jaquez and
Kareem Cyrus all contributed kills to the Cougars' 8-2 set-ending run to put Medgar up two sets to none.
The Lightning elected not to die down easy and amassed a seemingly-insurmountable 22-14 lead in the third set. The Cougars responded with a 4-0 run before Lehman responded with two straight points to put the score at 24-18. The men in black-and-gold won the next eight points, including three St. Clair kills and one by Jaquez, to send everybody home for the evening.
St. Clair led all players with 20 kills compared to just six errors on 36 attacks and added nine digs and five assists, while
Romell Carter enjoyed a stellar evening with 27 assists, eight digs, six kills, four aces, and a .500 hitting percentage. Jaquez chipped in seven kills and a team-best 11 digs.
The Cougars return to action on Sunday, March 10, for their toughest test of the season yet, a road CUNYAC matchup against Baruch College.
