LANGHORNE, PA - The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team played a road nonconference match against hosts Cairn University on Tuesday, April 2.
The Cougars (14-6) fell to the Highlanders (6-16) by a final score of three sets to one (17-25, 26-24, 20-25, 22-25).
After dropping set one 25-17, MEC found themselves on the brink down 24-22 in the second set. Three Cougar kills, one from
Cody Ramsey and two from
Nius St. Clair, plus a Cairn error powered the Medgar comeback as they tied the match.
However, it was not the Cougars' night in suburban Philadelphia as the Highlanders managed to fend off all Cougar charges over the final two sets.
Enmanuel Jaquez and St. Clair both recorded 18-kill double-doubles, with Jaquez totaling a team-high 17 digs and St. Clair adding 13 of his own. Jaquez enjoyed an outstanding attacking night, posting a .378 hitting percentage, while the duo were joined in double-figure digs by
Cody Ramsey with 13 and
Sebastiann Perez with 11.
Romell Carter and
Kareem Cyrus contributed 21 and 17 assists, respectively.
Meanwhile, Medgar Evers' CUNYAC foes CCNY and John Jay were competing in their CUNYAC finale at the same time as the aforementioned MEC-Cairn match. CCNY defeated John Jay three sets to one, meaning that Medgar Evers will be the #4 seed in the CUNYAC playoffs, and will host #5 seed John Jay College at the Cougars Cave on April 9 in the CUNYAC quarterfinals.
The Cougars return to action for their regular season finale on Thursday, April 4, when they host York College in a nonconference home match at the Cougars Cave at 7 pm. It will also be senior night, and seniors
Kareem Cyrus and
Abdul Kamara will be recognized before the match.
