BROOKLYN, NY - The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team played a road nonconference game at Brooklyn College on Wednesday, February 13.
The Cougars (5-0) defeated the Bulldogs (4-5) in five sets (25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 22-25, 15-11).Â
Medgar held a slim lead for much of the first set, before breaking things open with a 7-2 run to give the Cougars a 20-14 lead. Although Brooklyn pulled to within three points, Medgar finished off the set with a
Sebastiann Perez kill and a
Bishmii Sanchez ace.
The second set started in a similar fashion only it was Brooklyn who held a 13-10 lead. The black-and-gold then went on an 8-0 run, helped by six consecutive Bulldog attack errors, and eventually closed out the set on an
Austin Romeo kill.
The team's mission to finish off the Bulldogs in straight sets was hampered by the 8-3 deficit the Cougars faced to start the third set. Medgar fought back with a 7-0 run and eventually held a 14-11 lead, but with a hitting percentage of .000 in this set, this was the Cougars' sloppiest set of the match offensively and Brooklyn eventually won the third set.
Brooklyn again led much of the fourth set but Medgar tied the score at 17-all after a
Jovan Scott kill. However, the Bulldogs went on a 7-1 run to make the score 24-18, and they closed out the set to force a decisive fifth set.
The black-and-gold had an inspired start to the fifth set, grabbing a quick 8-3 lead. Brooklyn fought back to bring the score to 10-9, but the Cougars finished off the match with two kills and a service ace from
Enmanuel Jaquez to claim the conference victory.
Perez led Medgar with 14 kills and a .205 hitting percentage, adding seven digs. Jaquez stuffed the box score with 13 kills, 24 digs, four aces, and three assists, while
Alex Bridgelall dished out 40 assists. Scott also had a nice night with nine kills and 15 digs.Â
The Cougars return to action on Monday, February 17, for the CUNYAC Tri-Match at York College. The Cougars will play Hunter College at noon followed by the host institution at 2 pm.
