Women's soccer drops home opener to John Jay Bloodhounds

The Medgar Evers women's soccer team played its home opener on Wednesday afternoon, falling to CUNYAC foe John Jay College by a score of 16-0. The match took place at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to 0-2 on the 2023 campaign (0-1 CUNYAC), while the Bloodhounds improved to 4-5 (1-1 CUNYAC).

Thirteen John Jay players found the back of the net for the Bloodhounds, who scored early and often in the conference clash. Nora O'Connor registered three goals, recording a hat trick, to lead the charge. Sofia Astrabi contributed a pair of tallies, and Zoe Specht, Brooke Fontaine, Sierra Dazhan, Ellarose Bianca, Luiza Harutyunyan, Morgan DeGlopper, Keira Kepets, Alexandria Nembhard, Anixa Pulido, Jasmine Arias, and Melissa Orr each contributed one goal for the victorious visitors.

O'Connor registered a pair of goals within a two-minute span before registering a helper on Specht's goal, as John Jay held a 3-0 lead just before the seven minute mark. Fontaine scored in the 10th minute to catapult the Bloodhounds to a 4-0 advantage, and O'Connor struck again in the 14th minute to give the visitors a commanding 5-0 lead.

In the 18th minute, Dazhan cashed in on a penalty kick opportunity, slipping the ball into the lower right corner of the net to balloon John Jay's edge to six goals (6-0). 7:11 later, Bianca joined the barrage, netting a goal as John Jay continued to pad its advantage.

Harutyunyan scored in the 31st minute, before Astarbi registered a goal (from Catarina Johnson). Later, with five minutes remaining in the opening session, DeGlopper capitalized on a nifty pass from Johnson, slicing the ball in to make it 10-0 John Jay. The Bloodhounds' final goal of the stanza came courtesy of Astarbi's second tally of the afternoon, as John Jay led 11-0 at break.

John Jay continued to pile the goals in the second session, adding five more to account for the 16-0 final.

Despite a tough day in net, Medgar Evers goalkeeper Torey Richards still collected 15 saves.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Saturday, as the Cougars make the short trip to Brooklyn College to take on the Bulldogs in another CUNYAC clash. Start-time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
