Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer wraps-up road portion of 2023 slate with 5-1 defeat to Yeshiva University

The Medgar Evers women's soccer team dropped its final road match of the 2023 campaign, falling to the Maccabees of Yeshiva University by a score of 5-1 on Sunday evening. The match took place on the No. 10 field at Randall's Island. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 0-7 on the season, while the Maccabees closed the door on their campaign with two straight wins, finishing at 2-12.

Things looked promising for the Cougars early, as Medgar Evers took its first lead of the 2023 season in the sixth minute of action when Mamadou Ba scored an unassisted goal to put the visitors ahead 1-0. Later, at 21:51, Yeshiva netted the equalizer when Agam Halperin netted an unassisted tally of her own to make it 1-1.

Less than two minutes after Halperin's goal, Yeshiva's Alayna Higdon found the back of the net at 23:40 to put the Maccabees ahead by a count of 2-1. The hosts added two more tallies before the end of the half, thanks to goals by Leila Bakhshi (32:22, from Maya Aronson) and Leeby Levine (34:59). As time expired on the opening session, Yeshiva held a 4-1 advantage.

In the second half, Higdon added to Yeshiva's edge, as she scored her second goal of the evening at 50:47 to increase the Maccabees' commanding advantage to four goals at 5-1. That would be the final goal of the evening for either institution.

Yeshiva netminder Sophie Dubin got the victory, allowing one goal in 45 minutes of action. Backup goalkeeper Maayan Berkowitz played the second half, not allowing a score. For Medgar Evers, Venn Duvemeau made six saves despite taking the loss between the pipes.

Medgar Evers will close out its 2023 season on Tuesday afternoon, as the Cougars will host York College in a non-conference match at Aviator Field. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
