Hard-working Cougars improve to 2-1, outlast SUNY Purchase in five sets

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team picked up a thrilling non-conference victory on Thursday evening, outlasting the Panthers of SUNY Purchase by scores of 15-25, 25-16, 25-14, 19-25, and 15-9. The match took place in Purchase, NY. With the victory, the Cougars improved to 2-1 on the young season, while the Panthers slipped to 3-8.

Leading the way for the Cougars was senior standout Sebastiann Perez, as he continued his dominance in the early stages of this 2023 campaign, registering a match-highs of 26 kills and three service aces to go along with nine digs. Carlos Abreu notched a match-high 23 digs to go along with 10 kills and six assists, and Isaac Akindipe added seven kills and four block assists. Finally, it was senior setter Austin Romeo finishing with a match-high 40 assists to go along with eight digs.

Chris Posillico paced SUNY Purchase with a team-high 15 kills. He also added 11 digs and a pair of service aces. Marcus Garguilo tallied 13 kills, seven digs, and a match-high five block assists, and setter Chris Idris contributed a team-high 35 assists while notching seven digs and four block assists.

After dropping the first set 25-15, the Cougars rallied from an early 7-5 deficit in set number two to win it, 25-16. With the match tied at a set apiece, Medgar Evers dominated the third set, capturing it, 25-14. SUNY Purchase stayed alive in the fourth, scoring five of the final six points of the set to win it, 25-19. In the fifth and decisive set tied 9-9, the Cougars scored six consecutive points to close out the match. Perez registered three kills out of Medgar's final six points, putting a stamp on what was a phenomenal performance for the veteran.

Medgar Evers hit .162 for the match (51-29-136), while SUNY Purchase registered an .097 hitting percentage (38-24-145). Both teams registered seven service aces apiece, and the Cougars piled 13 block assists, while the hosts earned 10 block assists and one solo block.

The Cougars will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday afternoon, as Medgar Evers will travel to Jamaica, Queens to take on the York College Cardinals in a CUNYAC match. Start-time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
