Cougars' playoff hopes take hit with losses to CUNYAC foes Hunter, John Jay

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team lost a pair of CUNYAC matches in recent days, falling to the Hunter College Hawks by scores of 10-25, 18-25, and 7-25 Monday evening at the Cougars Cave, before losing to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College 16-25, 14-25, and 23-25 earlier this evening at the Doghouse in Midtown, Manhattan. With the defeats, the Cougars dipped to 4-12 on the 2023 campaign (1-9 CUNYAC). The Hawks improved to 15-5 Overall, 11-0 CUNYAC with the victory, and the Bloodhounds improved their record to 16-8 overall, and 8-3 in conference action with their victory.

In the Cougars' loss to Hunter College, Medgar Evers was paced by senior Sebastiann Perez, as he contributed team-highs of six kills and two service aces, while also registering six digs. Freshman Carlos Abreu added four kills and a match-high 11 digs, and Louis Caiola finalized his evening with three kills and three digs. Finally, senior setter Austin Romeo notched a team-high 11 assists.

For the Hawks, Ted Kim led all players with nine kills, earning a hitting percentage of .300 on the evening (9-3-20). He also added seven digs, as well. Matissee Lee-Maarek finished with seven kills (7-2-15, .333) go along with six digs, and Jose Menzoda recorded six kills (6-1-14, .357) while adding seven digs. Standout setter Cooper Moran piled 29 assists, leading all players.

Hunter College raced out to a 7-1 edge in the opening set. The Hawks later led 11-5, before going on a 6-1 run to snatch a commanding 17-6 edge. Medgar Evers attempted to claw back, as the teams split the next eight points, before Hunter notched the final four points to capture the set. Those final four points came courtesy of a set error by Romeo, an attack error by Abreu, and back-to-back kills by Kim and Moran. The Hawks hit a staggering .550 in the opening set, registering 12 kills while committing just one error on 20 attempts.

The Cougars gave the Hawks all they could handle in the second set. Medgar Evers led the set 2-1, and later trailed by just one (11-10), before three straight points pushed Hunter's edge to four, 14-10. Later, the Hawks led 18-14, but a kill by Caiola, and an ace by Perez, pulled the Cougars to within two (18-16). After the squads exchanged the next two points, Hunter scored four consecutive points, courtesy of a kill by Kim, attack errors by Caiola and Abreu, and another kill by Kim.

After a Medgar Evers timeout, Abreu earned a kill to halt the Hunter run momentarily, but the Hawks bounced back easily, as a Caiola service error, and a Moran service ace gave Hunter the second set victory.

Leading 2-0 in sets, Hunter College dominated the third and final set. Holding just a modest 6-3 edge in the early stages of the third, the Hawks put together their longest string of points all evening, scoring eight straight to take a 14-3 advantage. Medgar Evers wouldn't draw any closer than 10 points down for the remainder of the set, and later, Hunter scored five straight to capture the set, and the match (courtesy of an Isaac Akindipe attack error, an ace by Moran, a setting error by Romeo, a kill by Mendoza, and an attack error by Perez).

Logan Ramos finalized his evening with eight kills (8-2-21, .286) to go along with nine digs, and Jack Nugent and Akashdeep Singh earned seven kills apiece, with Nugent also recording three service aces. Alex Bridgelall and Max Law registered 20 and 17 assists, respectively, and Jeferson Avila led all Bloodhounds with 11 digs.

Things looked promising for the Cougars early, as Medgar Evers held an 8-5 lead for John Jay ran off four consecutive points, courtesy of a kill by Barriffe-Johnson, consecutive kills by Ramos, and a bad set by Romeo. After an Abreu kill tied the match at nine apiece, John Jay took the lead in the set for good, thanks to a Ramos kill.
John Jay didn't truly pull away in the opening set until later. The Bloodhounds, leading 18-14, scored five straight points to go up 23-14. Ramos earned two kills during that spurt, and Avila had one. The CUNYAC foes split the final four points to account for John Jay's 25-16 opening set win.

Medgar Evers led 3-2 in the early stages of the second, but the Bloodhounds dominated the set from there, outscoring the visitors 23-11 the rest of the way to snatch a 2-0 advantage in sets.

The Cougars held a 7-3 advantage in the third set, as they attempted to stay alive in the match, but John Jay scored the next seven points to catapult ahead by a score of 10-7. That run was highlighted by three kills from Nugent, and a pair of kills by Carlos Llivicura. The pendulum then swung Medgar Evers' way, as the Cougars earned four straight points, thanks to a kill by Kelcity Blacky, and three consecutive attack errors by Sebastian Rodriguez. At that juncture of the set, the Cougars held an 11-10 edge.

The set featured six more ties, with the latter of those knots coming when the teams were even at 19. Three straight Bloodhound points put the hosts ahead 22-20, and John Jay eventually scrapped its away to a 24-21 edge, before Medgar Evers kept things going with two straight points, courtesy of an attack error by Stephen Daly, and an race by Sebastian Rodriguez. John Jay closed it out on the ensuing serve when Singh slammed home a kill to send the home fans away happy.

John Jay was the more efficient team hitting-wise, earning an attack percentage of .198 (42-20-111), while the Cougars hit .044 for the evening (19-15-90). The Bloodhounds earned 46 digs to the Cougars' 39, and John Jay held a healthy edge in the service aces category, notching seven compared to two for Medgar Evers.

The Cougars will look to keep their slim playoff hopes alive next Tuesday, as Medgar Evers will welcome the City College of New York Beavers to the Cougars Cave. The CUNYAC clash is set for 7:00pm. Prior to the start, the Department of Athletics will take a few moments to honor graduating seniors Sebastiann Perez, Austin Romeo, and Jubril Okunlola in a special pre-match ceremony.
