Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Cougars finalize 2023 campaign on a positive, sweep Cardinals in CUNYAC doubleheader

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team closed out its 2023 campaign on a positive note Wednesday evening, earning a two-match sweep of the Cardinals of York College, winning the first match by scores of 25-0, 25-0, an 25-12, before turning around and winning the second contest, 25-8, 25-9, and 25-7. With the victories, the Cougars finalized their year at 6-14 (3-11 CUNYAC), while York slipped to 0-13 (0-13 CUNYAC).

Freshman Carlos Abreu led the way for the Cougars in the opener, leading all players with four kills while tying for team-high of four digs. Louis Caiola contributed three kills while tying for the team-high of four digs, and senior Austin Romeo registered seven assists. Finally, it was Isaac Akindipe recorded two service aces in the win.

The Cardinals were led by Glenever Stuart, as he posted a team-best three kills. Jaylen Campbell notched two kills, and Stanley Sanchez earned five assists (team-high) and five digs (match-high).

After York College forfeited the opening two sets, the Cougars got to work in the third. With the set tied 2-2, the Cougars put together a 6-0 run, highlighted by Akindipe's pair of service aces, and a kill by Caiola. After York momentarily, halted Medgar's run with a Stuart kill, the visitors would score three more, thanks to a kill by Kelcity Blacky, an attack error by Kalell Tajeddin, and a kill by Abreu. At that juncture of the set, the Cougars led 11-3.

The Cardinals sliced the Cougars' edge to six twice (11-5 and 13-7), but York wouldn't get any closer than that, as Medgar Evers' 9-2 run put the Cougars up 22-9, and later, leading 23-12, the Cougars closed out the set and the match thanks to an attack error by Sanchez, and a ferocious kill by Abreu.

In the second match of the evening, senior Sebastiann Perez and Abreu tied for the match-high of 11 kills. Perez also contributed five service aces and six digs, while Abreu piled a match-high 13 digs to go along with a pair of helpers and two service aces. Akindipe registered four kills and four digs, and Romeo earned match-highs of 23 assists and 11 service aces, while also contributing six digs.

For York College, Jaylen Campbell and Stuart earned two kills apiece. Sanchez finished with a team-high four assists, as well as two digs, and Marven Mondesir's four digs were a team-high.

Medgar Evers raced out to an 8-0 lead in the opening set, highlighted by Romeo's four service aces. Later, with the Cougars holding a 16-6 lead, the visitors ran off five straight points thanks an Akindipe kill, three more aces from Romeo, and a bad set by Tajeddin, to go up 21-6. Medgar would outscore the hosts 4-2 from there to take set one, 25-8.

The Cougars catapulted to an early 8-1 advantage in the second set, with Perez notching two kills during that spurt, and Romeo adding two more aces. York kept things respectable for a short time, trailing Medgar Evers just 13-6, but the Cougars dominated the remainder of the set, outscoring the Cardinals 12-3 from there to slam the door on a 25-9 victory in set two. Three of Medgar Evers' final six points of the set came courtesy of three Perez kills.

In the final set of the evening, the Cougars earned the first nine points. That spurt included two kills by Perez, one for Akindipe, and a service ace by Romeo. After a service error by Romeo made it 9-1, Medgar Evers put together yet another 9-0 run to take a commanding 18-1 advantage. That run included five service aces by Perez. Later, leading 23-7, Medgar Evers closed out the set and the match thanks to a Blacky kill, and an ace by Abreu.

Despite the Cougars missing out on the postseason, the team still has plenty to be proud of, and plenty to look forward to. Seniors Sebastiann Perez and Austin Romeo put forth tremendous seasons, and freshman standout Carlos Abreu established himself as one of the most exciting young players in the conference. Head Coach Eric Archer, in his first season, acclimated himself to the Medgar Evers culture and made a noticeable difference. With Archer in place, a slew of promising young talent slated to return, and some potential recruits joining the fray, the future is looking bright for Medgar Evers' men's volleyball team!
