Cody Ramsey turns in another stellar effort in Medgar Evers' three-set CUNYAC defeat at John Jay

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team suffered a three-set loss to CUNYAC foe John Jay on Tuesday evening, falling to the Bloodhounds by scores of 11-25, 14-25, and 19-25. The clash took place at the Doghouse in Midtown, Manhattan. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 0-10 on the 2024 campaign (0-9 CUNYAC), while the Bloodhounds improved to 14-5 on the year, and 7-3 in conference action.

Leading the way for the Cougars in their victory was veteran Cody Ramsey, as the standout led all players with match-highs of 10 kills and seven digs. Louis Caiola finalized his evening with four kills, three block assists, and a pair of digs, and Carlos Abreu contributed three kills, a team-high 12 assists, and four digs. Finally, it was freshman Patrick Mateo registering five digs and four assists.

Logan Ramos paced John Jay, earning a team-best eight kills on 12 attempts (8-0-12, .667). He also tied for the team-high of four digs while sprinkling in three assists. Jeferson Avila-Macancela earned five kills while tying Ramos with four digs, and Micah Rossman posted a 1.000 hitting percentage, tallying five kills on five attempts, while also adding three digs. Setter Alex Bridgelall posted match-highs of 13 assists and four service aces, and Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo added nine assists.

In the opening set, the Bloodhounds raced out to a 10-2 advantage following an attack error by Ramsey. With John Jay later leading 12-5 and Evan Wandersee holding serve, the Bloodhounds rattled off five consecutive points, capped by a kill from Bridgelall, to snatch a commanding 17-5 advantage. The Bloodhounds closed out the first scoring eight of the final 13 points in taking the first set, 25-11. John Jay efficiently hit .263 in the opening set while only committing two attack errors. 

Trailing 9-4 in set number two, Medgar Evers scored three consecutive points, courtesy of three attack errors by John Jay (two by Stephen Daly, and one by Jaden Lamarre), to inch to within two points at 9-7. The Bloodhounds snatched momentum back from the Cougars from there scoring 13 of the set's next 20 points to take a 22-14 edge. John Jay then captured the set with three straight points, earned via one kill apiece by Ramos, Steven Ajazi, and Bridgelall.

John Jay held a 21-14 advantage in the third set, but the Cougars refused to go quietly, scoring for of the ensuing five points to pull to within four at 22-18. Three Bloodhounds errors, as well as a kill from Caiola, accounted for the Medgar Evers points during that aforementioned run. John Jay then used a kill by Avila and a service ace by Maxwell Law to push its edge to six, 24-18, but Law then served the ball into the net to keep Medgar Evers alive. Down 24-19, Caiola served the ball into the net to end the set, and the match.

For the evening, John Jay swatted .308 (32-12-65), while Medgar Evers earned a hitting percentage of .070 (19-15-57). The Bloodhounds held a whopping 11-0 edge in service aces, while also piling 31 assists to the Cougars' 19. Finally, it was John Jay earning a slim edge in the digs, tallying 21 compared to 19 for the visitors.

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Thursday evening, as the Cougars travel to Jamaica, Queens to take on CUNYAC opponent York College. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
