Aitcheson registers shutout, Lawrence scores match-winner as Cougars beat Eagles for first victory since 2017

The Medgar Evers College women's soccer team picked up its first victory since September 13, 2017, defeating the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University by a score of 1-0 in a non-conference match on Wednesday evening. The clash took place at Old Boys High School Field in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, the Cougars are now 1-5 on the 2026 campaign, while the visitors dipped to 0-9.

Danajah Lawrence scored the game's only goal in the 28th minute, converting a pass from Serenity Delva at the 27:28 mark to give the Cougars the lead. Medgar Evers carried the advantage into halftime and maintained its defensive composure throughout the second half to secure the shutout victory.

Lawrence led the Cougars' offensive attack with eight shots on goal among her 13 total attempts. She also had an opportunity to add an insurance goal from the penalty spot in the 80th minute, but her attempt was saved by Saint Elizabeth goalkeeper Danielle Fredo.

Goalkeeper Shanya Aitcheson delivered a strong performance for Medgar Evers, recording six saves to preserve the shutout. The Cougars faced 19 shots from the Golden Eagles, including nine in the second half, but kept Saint Elizabeth off the scoreboard.

Defender Damali Browne put forth a fantastic effort throughout the evening, limiting the Eagles' scoring chances with intelligent and gritty play.

Saint Elizabeth threatened late in the contest, with Elizabeth Giamboy striking the crossbar in the 77th minute. However, the Cougars held firm over the final minutes to close out the victory.

Medgar Evers finished with 14 shots, including eight on target, while Saint Elizabeth recorded 19 shots and put six on goal.

The Cougars will return to action Saturday afternoon, traveling to Allentown, Pennsylvania, to face Cedar Crest College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
