The Medgar Evers College Cougars women's soccer team suffered a setback in CUNYAC action Saturday afternoon, falling to the CCNY Beavers at a match played in New Rochelle, NY. The Cougars battled through the conference contest but were unable to generate offensive opportunities against a CCNY defense that kept Medgar Evers off the scoresheet.
CCNY jumped out to an early advantage, scoring just 35 seconds into the contest when Pamela Pineda converted a chance off an assist from Marjorie Placencia. Placencia added a goal of her own 46 seconds later, and the Beavers continued to apply pressure throughout the opening minutes.
Valeria Diaz scored twice before the five-minute mark, finding the net at 2:49 and 4:58, before Yessenia Yascaribay added another goal at 10:50. CCNY's five first-half goals gave the Beavers a commanding advantage heading into halftime.
Medgar Evers goalkeeper Abigail Abraham started the match and played the opening 26:46 before Jocelyn Bravo Diaz took over in goal. Bravo Diaz played the remaining 63:14 and recorded five saves while facing a relentless CCNY attack.
The Cougars were unable to register a shot during the match, while CCNY finished with 25 total shots, including 18 on goal. Medgar Evers' defensive unit and Bravo Diaz managed to keep the Beavers off the board for portions of the second half, but CCNY ultimately added eight more goals after halftime.
Diaz completed a four-goal performance for the Beavers, adding two more goals early in the second half. Pineda also finished with two goals, while Guncay, Larisa Hodzic, Zherlyn Guaillazaca, Sarah Applewhite and CCNY goalkeeper Jade Salas each found the net once.
The Beavers received six assists on their 13 goals, with Placencia, Yascaribay, Scarlyn Jimenez, Valentina Diaz, Josoniah Terry and Applewhite each credited with at least one helper. CCNY also held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Despite the difficult result, the Cougars will have an opportunity to regroup quickly as they return to CUNYAC play for another conference clash tomorrow afternoon, as Medgar Evers travels to Lehman College for another CUNYAC contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
