Cougars wrap up 2026 campaign with non-conference loss to Saint Elizabeth University Eagles in straight sets

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team finalized its 2026 campaign last night in Morristown, NJ, falling to the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University in straight sets, by scores of 8-25, 5-25, and 13-25. The match took place at Saint Joseph's Hall on the campus of the Eagles. With the loss, the Cougars wrapped up their season at 0-18, while Saint Elizabeth University finished up at 3-15.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, Ahmed Toure registered a team-high three kills while adding a pair of digs. Freshman Christian Owolabi notched a kill while recording a team-best five digs and a service ace, and veteran Nkosi Fraser contributed a kill, a dig, and an assist. Finally, it was Shabbir Ahmed leading all Cougars with team-highs of two service aces and two assists.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Kennedy Ibezim, as he registered a match-high 16 kills (16-3-26, .500) to go along with four digs and a pair of service aces. Akash Jenkins added seven kills (7-0-10, .700) while recording four service aces and four digs, and Enock Joachim finalized his evening with four kills (4-0-5, .800), four service aces, and a match-high six digs. Kyzier Kelly's five service aces were a match-high, and setter Randel Romero's 31 assists led all players.

Saint Elizabeth University raced out to a quick 7-0 advantage in the opening set, highlighted by two kills by Ibezim, a kill apiece by Jenkins and Carlos Saldana, and two service aces by Jenkins. Later, with the hosts owning a 12-4 edge, the Eagles put together another prolonged spurt, notching eight consecutive points to boost their commanding edge to 16, 20-4. During that aforementioned stretch, Jenkins registered two kills, with Romero recording a pair of service aces.

Later in the set, with Saint Elizabeth University holding a 23-5 advantage, Medgar Evers scored three of the ensuing four points to pull to within 16 (24-8), but Ibezim clinched the set for his team with a kill, as the Eagles won it, 25-8.

Medgar Evers snatched a 1-0 advantage to start the second set on an attack error by Kyzier Kelly, but the Eagles scored the next six points, with Kelly slamming home two kills, Ibezim notching one, and Saldana adding an ace during that stretch. The Eagles held a 6-1 advantage, and after the Cougars halted their momentum with a point to make it 6-2, Saint Elizabeth University scored the next nine to snatch a 15-2 edge. Kelly piled five aces, and Joachim recorded two kills during that aforementioned spurt. The Cougars never threatened during the set, as the Eagles outscored the Cougars 10-3 down the stretch to clinch it, 25-5, taking a 2-0 lead in sets for the non-conference clash.

Trailing 7-4 in the third set, the Cougars inched to within one thanks to an attack error by Raoul-Michel Bouzi, and a service ace by Owolabi. The hosts responded with a 5-0 run to increase their advantage to six, 12-6. Bouzi recorded a pair of service aces to cap that spurt. Toure recorded a kill to halt the Eagles' run there, but Saint Elizabeth University scored the next five to go ahead 17-7. Ibezim scored the latter two points of that run, slamming home a pair of kills.

Down 10, the Cougars refused to go quietly. Medgar Evers scored the next five points, thanks to a pair of kills by Toure, two service aces by Shabbir, and an attack error by Ibezim, to pull to within five, 17-12. The Eagles responded emphatically, however, notching eight of the next nine points to win the set 25-13, and take the match, 3-0. During that final push, Ibezim contributed three kills, with Joachim notching a pair of service aces.

Saint Elizabeth University hit .419 for the match (35-9-62), compiling 32 assists, 22 service aces, and 31 digs. Medgar Evers finished with five kills, three assists, three service aces, and 11 digs.
