WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL DROPS 1ST CONFERENCE MATCH OF 2014 TO CCNY

Box Score New York, NY- The Medgar Evers College Women's Volleyball team fell to the City College of New York Beavers 3-0 (18-25, 23-25, 18-25) earlier tonight. The Beavers improve to 2-3 Overall and 1-0 CUNYAC while the Cougars drop to 0-2 Overall and 0-1 CUNYAC. 

In the 1st set, the Cougars led 1-0, then went on 3-0 run, before CCNY chipped at the lead. After the Beavers gained the lead at 7-6, the Cougars mounted a mini comeback, and regained the lead once more at 9-8. The Beavers took back the lead at 12-11, and went on a 13-7 run, to win the set 25-18. The Cougars tallied a kill on 19 total attacks in the set.

In the 2nd set, the Cougars led three times. Down 4-1, Medgar Evers College, clawed back and took over the lead at 5-4. They would hold the lead until the score was 14-9. This was when City College went on a 16-9 run, to win the set 25-23. The Cougars tallied five kills on 17 total attacks. 

In the 3rd set, the Cougars never led. They did however fight hard throughout the set, and tied the match three separate occasions. At 1-0, 7-6, and 15-14, the Cougars tied the score but couldn't get over the hump. The Cougars tallied four kills on 28 total attacks.

In the loss, the Cougars were led by Senior Outside Hitter Kiwelewa Mlimwengu. The Brooklyn, NY native recorded a team high six kills on 23 total attacks. Kiwelewa dished out an assist, gathered two service aces, four digs, and a blocking assist. Sophomores Malado Kaba and Kalifa Roberts each recorded two kills apiece. The Middle Hitter Kaba added a service ace, and five digs. The Outside Hitter Roberts added a team high in aces with four service aces, and digs with eight. Junior Setter AnnMarie Bemberry tallied a team high six assists. The Brooklyn, NY native gathered a service ace, six digs, and two solo blocks.    

In the win, CCNY was led by Leticia Marotti and Saye-Chanti Joseph each with nine kills apiece. 

The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday Sept. 6, 2014, when they travel to New Rochelle, NY and take on The College of Old Westbury at 1pm and the College of New Rochelle at 3pm.
