Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Medgar Evers women's soccer team played a hard-fought game, but could not break through with a goal as they fell to CUNYAC foe York College (N.Y.), 9-0, Saturday afternoon on the campus of Kingsborough Community College.
Kenia Diaz (Queens, N.Y./Allentown Central) played a remarkable game in her first game as goalkeeper for the Cougars (0-6), making 16 saves on 25 shots on net.
Sciancia Metelus (Petionville, Haiti/Edward R. Murrow) and
Charlyn Jordan (St. John's Antigua/Clara Hall) each put a shot on goal, but could not find the back of the net in a losing effort.
Kennisha Wills totaled five goals and an assists in the win for the Cardinals (2-3), while Jennifer Durazno added two goals of her own. Verenice Gomez and Antonella Campos each compiled a goal and an assist in the victory.
Following a scoreless first 15 minutes of the first half, York got on the board when Wills beat the goalie on a breakaway goal. Durazno would add two straight scores in four minutes to extend their lead in the 26th minute. Campos would beat the keeper on the lower right win, then Wills would notch a hat trick before going into intermission up 5-0.
Wills would continue her individual offensive performance with three second-half goals to seal the victory for the Cardinals, using her speed to break away from the pack and tally the scores.
The Cougars will try to bounce back from this defeat when they take part of a doubleheader with the men's team. Both will take on borough rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) at Aviator Sports Complex. The women's game starts at 6:00 p.m., followed by the men's matchup at 8:00 p.m.
