Box Score Men's Basketball Loses 67-59 at Hunter in CUNYAC Opener
(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Medgar Evers men's basketball team traveled to conference rival Hunter College for their conference opener. Medgar Evers was defeated 67-59 making it their fifth straight loss. With the loss, Medgar Evers falls to 1-5 (0-1 CUNYAC) while Hunter improves to 4-2 (2-0 CUNYAC) on the season.
Medgar Evers shot just 39% for the game going 24 of 62 while making just 4 of 17 (24%) three pointers. At the free throw line Medgar Evers struggled only making 7-18 (39%) while Hunter made more free throws than the Cougars attempted going 21 of 39 (54%).
Both team struggled to get anything going early and then sophomore guard
Joancarlo Bonilla (Woodside, N.Y.) nailed a three for the first bucket of the game. Then sophomore guard
Justin Sutton (Brooklyn, N.Y) scored another basket to put Medgar Evers up 5-0 but that lead was quickly erased when Hunter went on a 8-0 run, they led the rest of the way.
Sutton lead the Cougars with a game high 20 points on 8 of 18 (44%) shooting while grabbing eight rebounds and snatching three steals. Freshman forward
Joevanny Dambreville (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Bonilla were the only other Cougars in double-figures. Dambreville had 15 to go along with nine rebounds. Bonilla scored 13 points while grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds on the night.
Hunter was led by
Matt Franks who tallied 17 points on just nine shots while also grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. Men's basketball is back in action Tuesday, December 6
th when they host York College for their conference home opener. The game will begin at 8 p.m.
