Nia Tompkins (Queens, N.Y.) poured in a team-best 22 points, including her 1,000th career point, as the Medgar Evers women's basketball snapped their losing streak with a 62-54 CUNYAC win over John Jay Friday night at the Cougars Cave.
Tompkins hit a three-pointer with 59 seconds left in the second quarter to tally her 1,000th point. She connected on five three-pointers, along with two steals and three rebounds for the Lady Cougars (2-20, 2-11 CUNYAC). They also got double-doubles from both
Danyelle Foster (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Kimonia Mullings (Queens, N.Y.) in the victory. Foster compiled with 17 points to go with 15 boards, three assists and three steals. Mullings corralled 15 rebounds with 10 points and two blocks.
Victoria Royal secured a double-double of her own for the Bloodhounds (5-18, 2-12 CUNYAC) in a losing effort. She scored 16 points and grabbed a game-best 19 rebounds. Dana Nicholson and Shaliyah Ruiz each chipped in with nine points each.
Following a back-and-forth first half that saw John Jay take a 29-27 lead into intermission, the Lady Cougars fell behind further after a 7-0 Bloodhound run that forced a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Foster totaled seven of the team's next nine consecutive points to even the score.
Trailing by two points, Tompkins hit a wild three-pointer off glass from way out as time expired to take a 41-40 lead after three quarters. In the fourth, Tompkins drilled two triples and the Lady Cougars hit 11 of 14 free throws in the quarter to increase their advantage as they closed out the victory.
Up next for Medgar Evers is a road matchup against CUNYAC foe the College of Staten Island Tuesday night as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
