Box Score Men's Basketball Gets Big Home Win over Hunter 84-78, Snap Eight Game Losing Streak
(BROOKLYN, N.Y.) – The Medgar Evers men's basketball hosted the Hawks of Hunter College in a CUNYAC matchup on Friday night at the Cougars' Cave. The Cougars battled tough and came away with a tough conference win by a score of 84-78. With the win, Medgar Evers improves to 4-14 (3-8 CUNYAC) while Hunter falls to 7-13 (5-6) on the year.
The Cougars played great basketball in the first half getting scoring contributions from seven players. As a team they shot an incredible 19-29 (66%) from the field while getting 10 assists off those 19 shots. One of the highlights from the half was in the final seconds when junior guard
Maurice Swaby II (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took a deep three from the left wing. He missed right and with two seconds left sophomore guard
Joancarlo Bonilla (Woodside, N.Y.) caught the rebound and put up a shot, all while in mid air and just as the horn sounded his jumper went through the net.
It was a good second half for the Cougars also as they pushed their lead to as many as 17 with just under nine minutes remaining. Hunter made a late push as they went on a 16-2 run to cut the lead to just three with 1:51 left. Freshman forward
Joevanny Dambreville (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a big and-one layup to make it a six point game. Then sophomore guard
Justin Sutton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) knocked down a jumper along with four clutch free throws to seal the win.
Maurice Swaby II led the Cougars with a game-high 28 points on an efficient 10-14 shooting including 4-5 from three. He added six boards, six assists and two steals as well.
Joancarlo Bonilla added 16 points and five assists.
