Men's Basketball Battles Maritime in Season Opener

THROGGS NECK, NY - The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team commenced their 2019-20 season with a road game against Maritime College on Saturday, November 9.

The Cougars fell to the Privateers by a final score of 84-69.

The game started out very well as Medgar jumped out to a 13-8 lead, with Elias Scott and Devin Berrios scoring all the Cougar points. MEC held the lead until under two minutes to go in the first half when Maritime took a 34-33 lead, and at halftime Medgar was trailing 36-35.

The Cougars tied the game at 43-all with a pair of Mousa Sinera free-throws, and two Berrios jumpers, including one from three-point range, put Medgar up 48-44 with 13 and a half minutes left, before Isaiah Garvey-Mwazi dunked to make the score 50-47.

At that point, the Privateers went on a 25-8 run to make the score 72-58 with six minutes left, a margin which the Cougars count not recover from.

"We played a solid 25 minutes tonight," said Head Coach Brian Nigro. "We need to find a way to execute for 40 minutes."

Sinera finished with a game-high 16 rebounds in addition to 11 points, while Scott and Berrios finished with four three-pointers each and 21 and 20 points, respectively.

Marcus Lewis led the team with three assists and added six rebounds and four points.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, November 12, for the team's home opener against Clarks Summit University, which will also be Veterans Recognition Night.
