Men's Basketball Battles D-I St. Francis in Exhibition, Takes on Valley Forge in Shootout

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team continued their 2019-20 season with an exhibition contest against Division I St. Francis College in Brooklyn, followed by a nonconference road game at the University of Valley Forge.

AT ST. FRANCIS (THURSDAY, 11/21/19)

On Thursday, the Cougars traveled to Brooklyn Heights to take on Division I St. Francis College in an exhibition contest.

The Terriers of the Northeast Conference defeated Medgar 122-58.

The Cougars quickly fell behind 24-11, but showed their toughness and talent in battling back to make the score 31-24. The black-and-gold hung around until halftime against their much-fancied opponents, and the score was 59-33 at intermission, a respectable margin against a team full of scholarship players.

In the second half, the Terriers pulled away as the Medgar legs tired. Devin Berrios finished with a team-high 13 points on six-of-10 shooting, while Marcus Lewis finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 assists. Naquavah Jackson contributed 10 points, six rebounds, two steals, and a block, while Isaiah Garvey-Mwazi chipped in 11 points.

AT VALLEY FORGE (SATURDAY, 11/23/19)

On Saturday, Medgar traveled to Phoenixville, PA, where they took on the University of Valley Forge.

The Patriots defeated the Cougars 111-90.

The first half was very evenly-matched and high-scoring, with the lead changing hands on 11 occasions. At halftime, the score was 52-49 in favor of Valley Forge.

The Cougars pulled within 1 point after an Elias Scott jumper to open the second half. After falling behind by as much as nine, the resilient black-and-gold pulled within one point after a tough Jackson layup in the paint with just over 12 minutes remaining made the score 69-68.

From that point on, the UVF offense exploded, scoring 51 points in the last 12 minutes, while the Medgar offense stalled out by comparison.

Jackson finished with a team-best 27 points on 10-13 shooting, hitting seven of 10 threes and adding nine rebounds and two blocks. Keison McIntosh finished with 17 points, while Lewis chipped in with 15 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Garvey-Mwazi was again a big contributor with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Cougars return to action on Monday, November 25, when the Cougars take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7 pm at the Cougars Cave.
