NEW YORK, NY - The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team opened their 2019-10 CUNY Athletic Conference campaign on Tuesday, December 3, at Hunter College.
The Cougars fell to the Hawks by a final score of 95-70.
The early action was evenly-matched, with both teams getting buckets as Medgar opened a 13-11 lead. Hunter went on a 7-0 run to take an 18-14 lead, and the home team's lead quickly ballooned to 13 points. Despite baskets by
Devin Berrios,
Keison McIntosh,
Jonathan Grimsley, and
Marcus Lewis, which helped the Cougars hang around, Hunter eventually took a 50-33 lead with just under three minutes left in the half.
Medgar closed the first half on a 9-2 run, though, and entered halftime down 52-42, certainly within striking distance. However, the second half started about as bad as it possibly could have for the Cougars, with the Hawks scoring the first 11 points of the half. A timeout by Head Coach
Brian Nigro settled the team down, with McIntosh hitting a quick triple and Grimsley finishing a layup. However, the black-and-gold struggled to get stops on the defensive end, which prevented them from mounting a serious comeback, and Medgar's deficit never fell below 17 points the rest of the contest.
McIntosh and Grimsley led the Cougars with 17 points apiece, with Berrios chipping in with 14. Grimsley finished with 12 rebounds to complete his double-double.
The team returns to action this Friday at 8 pm, when the College of Staten Island pays a visit to the Cougars Cave for an 8 pm contest.
