Men's Basketball Battles CCNY on the Road

Scott (25 points) and Sutton (23, 7 reb, 4 ast) pace Cougars in tough CUNYAC defeat

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team played a road CUNYAC matchup against CCNY in New York, NY, on Friday, February 2.

The Cougars (7-14, 6-7 CUNYAC) were defeated by the Beavers (3-18, 3-9) by a final score of 90-77. MEC now sits two games ahead of York, who is currently the first team on the outside of the CUNYAC playoff picture.

Joancarlo Bonilla opened the game with a three-pointer, but the 3-0 lead was the only time Medgar was in front all game. CCNY then went on a 9-0 run and opened up a 25-13 lead midway through the first half.

The Cougars closed the deficit to three by halftime, but with seven minutes left in the second half, the Beaver advantage had reached 17 points.

MEC remained in contention until the very end, clawing back to within six with just under two minutes left, but CCNY kept hitting clutch shots down the stretch and the Cougars were unable to overcome the Beaver shot-making.

Elias Scott finished with 25 points and added three assists and three rebounds, while Justin Sutton added 23 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Isaiah Garvey-Mwazi kept MEC in the game in the first half when they were down big with a number of tough baskets and finished with 15 points and three rebounds.

The black-and-gold were deadly from deep tonight, connecting on 13-of-33 from downtown, an almost 40% rate. However, the team managed to make only 14-of-38 two-pointers, a 36.8% mark.

The Cougars return to action tomorrow, when they take on Clarks Summit University in a game which had been postponed due to inclement weather. The game will tip-off at 5:00 pm.
