Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

8-0 Men's Volleyball Claws Back to Beat John Jay

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team played a road CUNYAC match against John Jay College at the Doghouse in New York, NY, on Tuesday, February 26.

The Cougars (8-0, 2-0 CUNYAC) defeated the Bloodhounds (8-8, 1-2) by a final score of three sets to two (23-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-23, 15-10). Medgar Evers is one of two undefeated teams left in NCAA Division III.

John Jay won the first two sets handily. In the first set, Medgar posted a hitting percentage of .130 compared to John Jay's .304, and in the second set MEC's was .048 while the Bloodhounds hit .296.

The third set appeared to be heading in the same direction, as the Cougars trailed for the majority of the set. Down 19-16, Nius St. Clair hit three kills and Enmanuel Jaquez smacked one of his own as MEC responded with a 7-1 run to make the score 23-20. John Jay fought back to tie the game at 23 and again at 24, but St. Clair broke the deadlock with another kill and Cody Ramsey and Kareem Cyrus combined for a block to make the score two sets to one.

The fourth set was also close but it was Medgar who held the lead and the momentum for much of the set. The Cougars were leading 17-12 but soon found themselves trailing 22-21 after a 10-4 Bloodhound run which included eight MEC errors. The Cougars showed guts, however, and closed out the set with three consecutive St. Clair kills from Romell Carter assists.

After MEC took a 2-1 lead in the decisive fifth set, they led the rest of the way and won convincingly, 15-10.

St. Clair recorded a career-best 30 kills and added 13 digs and an ace. Carter finished with 34 assists while Jaquez and Sebastiann Perez added a dozen digs apiece. Gerod Humphrey and Jaquez finished with four and three blocks, respectively.

The Cougars return to action on Thursday, February 28, as they welcome borough neighbors St. Joseph's College - Brooklyn to the Cougars Cave at 7 pm.
