The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team played a road nonconference match against fellow CUNYAC member CCNY at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, NY, on Thursday, February 7.
The Cougars (4-0) defeated the Beavers (3-2) by a margin of three sets to one (25-19, 24-26, 25-19, 25-21). Medgar Evers, who were
projected to finish last in the CUNYAC preseason coaches' poll, have now already defeated the teams that were projected to finish
fourth and fifth out of the eight CUNYAC teams.
MEC started the match in excellent form, posting a ridiculous .765 hitting percentage in set one as they closed the set on a 17-9 run to win 25-19.
The second set ended in heartbreaking fashion. The set was back and forth throughout but CCNY led for most of the way. A 9-4 run put Medgar in position to close out the set at 24-22, but the Beavers responded with four straight points to hand MEC their first set defeat of the season.
The Cougars regrouped quickly and in set three, they led most of the way, closing out the set on a 7-1 run to take a two-sets-to-one advantage. Midway through set four, which had been tied at 9-9, MEC stormed out to a 19-13 lead and never looked back, finishing out their fourth consecutive match win of the season in style with two kills apiece from
Nius St. Clair and
Cody Ramsey.
St. Clair finished with a match-high 23 kills and three aces while adding six digs and two blocks.
Romell Carter totaled 33 assists, while
Enmanuel Jaquez,
Kareem Cyrus and
Sebastiann Perez each recorded a team-best seven digs. Jaquez and Ramsey contributed ten and eight kills, respectively, while
Jovan Scott added a team-best three blocks and also five kills. The Cougars recorded an excellent .350 hitting percentage, compared to just .198 for the Beavers.
MEC returns to action on Tuesday, February 12, for a road match against St. Joseph's College - Brooklyn at 7:00 pm.
