The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team played a tri-match at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY, on Saturday, March 16.
The Cougars (13-1) defeated Lehman College (3-15) in straight sets before topping the host Dolphins (2-9) in three as well.
MEC started their afternoon off against their CUNYAC companions in a nonconference match. The Cougars outclassed the Lightning in set one, recording eight kills and four errors, compared to Lehman's two kills and nine errors, as they cruised to a 25-12 victory. Lehman improved their performance in the second set, totaling five kills and seven errors, but MEC blasted twelve kills to just two errors as Medgar took a 2-0 lead in sets.
The third set was a completely different story, as Lehman recorded eight error-free kills and held a 19-16 lead. That was when MEC went on an 8-0 tear with two kills apiece from
Nius St. Clair,
Gerod Humphrey and
Cody Ramsey in addition to a service ace from
Austin Romeo as MEC closed out the third set at 25-20 with another Humphrey kill, his sixth of the match.
Enmanuel Jaquez finished with a game-high 10 kills in addition to four digs and a .471 hitting percentage, while St. Clair finished with seven kills, six digs and two blocks. Ramsey totaled eight kills and three digs,
Sebastiann Perez contributed a team-best seven digs, and
Romell Carter and
Kareem Cyrus posted totals of 15 and 12 assists, respectively.
In the second match of the day, the Cougars stormed out to a 15-4 lead against the Dolphins and led by as much as 13 as they cruised to a set one victory. In the second set, Medgar also grabbed the early advantage and were winning 10-5, before CMSV rallied. WIth the set tied at 15-apiece, MEC won five of the next seven points, before the Dolphins replied with a 3-1 run of their own and the score was 21-20 MEC. The black-and-gold responded with a 4-2 run and claimed the set.
CMSV surprised the Cougars in the third set by taking a 6-1 lead, before MEC stormed back and suddenly, the Cougars were leading 14-10. The Medgar lead ballooned to 18-12 after a Ramsey kill, but the Dolphins did not allow themselves to drown and fought back to make the score 23-21 MEC. An attack error and a Romeo ace ended the match with the Cougars undefeated on the day.
Ramsey recorded match-high totals of ten kills, eight digs and four aces, Cyrus added three aces and a game-high 14 assists, and St. Clair tallied eight kills and seven digs.
The Cougars return to action this Thursday, March 21, for a home match against CUNYAC-leading Hunter College at the Cougars Cave at 7 pm.
