Women's Volleyball Opens Season at Sarah Lawrence Tri-Match

Cougars fall to two tough opponents

BRONXVILLE, NY - The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team faced off against Brooklyn College and Sarah Lawrence College at the Sarah Lawrence College Tri-Match on Friday, August 30, 2019.

The Cougars (0-2) fell to the Bulldogs (1-1) in their opening match of the season, before being defeated by the Gryphons (2-0) later that same afternoon.

After dropping the opening set against Brooklyn, 25-13, the Cougars bounced back in the second set, amassing a 15-9 advantage. They held the lead until it was 18-13, at which point our Bedford Ave. foes rattled off a 10-0 run to make the score 23-18 in their favor.

Despite a late 3-0 run, Medgar dropped the set 25-21, before losing the final set by a 25-15 margin.

Sashamoni Burnett led all players with eight kills and added two digs, while Cristina Carnegie posted match-high totals of nine assists and six digs. Melisa Wright contributed a further four kills, match-high three blocks and three digs, Cristal Joseph had a well-rounded afternoon with six digs, five kills, and two aces, and Britenie Marcelus added a team-best three aces.

The Cougars and Bulldogs each smacked 18 kills, but Brooklyn fired 24 aces to Medgar's seven despite the Cougars holding a 4-1 advantage in blocks.

Against Sarah Lawrence, the Cougars were outclassed in set one, falling 25-5. The second set looked to be a repeat of the first, with the black-and-gold down 17-7, before the Cougars clawed back to make the score 18-14.

Unfortunately, Medgar scored only one more point the rest of the set as they lost 25-15, before dropping the third set as well.

Burnett led MEC with seven kills and one block, while Carnegie added a team-best four assists and five digs.

The Cougars next take the court on Thursday, September 5, for their home opener against Purchase College at 7 pm at the Cougars Cave.
