PURCHASE, NY - The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team played a road nonconference match at Purchase College on Tuesday, February 4.
The Cougars (3-0) defeated the Panthers (1-5) in straight sets (25-21, 25-15, 25-22), their third-consecutive straight-sets win to start their 2020 campaign.
It looked like it was going to be a difficult night as Medgar quickly fell behind 7-1 in the first set. Although the Cougars fought back, Purchase replied with a 5-0 run to make the score 19-12.
However, the black-and-gold showed their ability, closing the set on a 13-2 run, which included nine Medgar kills, including five from
Sebastiann Perez.
The second set went much more smoothly for the Cougars, who seized an early 9-4 lead and controlled the set for the rest of the way.
The third set started out in a similar fashion, with the Cougars jumping out to a 9-3 lead. However, Purchase was not ready to quit, and they battled back to cut Medgar's lead to just 22-21. However, two
Enmanuel Jaquez kills finished off the match in Medgar's favor.
Perez led the way for Medgar with 10 kills and a .444 hitting percentage, while Jaquez and
Jovan Scott led the team with eight digs apiece.
Defending CUNYACÂ Rookie of the Week Alex Bridgelall dished out 23 assists as well.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, February 11, for a home contest against the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 7 pm.
