Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Medgar Evers drains 13 triples in loss to Division I Fairfield

Box Score

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team slipped to 1-3 on the season on Tuesday evening, falling to Division I institution Fairfield University by a score of 110-55. The game took place at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and was broadcast nationally on ESPN 3. The Stags registered their first win of the 2021-2022 season, improving to 1-2. Although the Cougars were on the losing end of a lopsided score, head coach Brian Nigro still believes the team took something positive out of the evening.

"We entered this game understanding that this was going to be an incredibly tall task, coming here to Fairfield University to play a program of this caliber," Nigro said. "Although we were defeated, I feel as though it was a very positive experience for our young team, which features 10 freshmen. We came here and played in a popular Division I gymnasium in the Webster Bank Arena. Our student-athletes gave their best efforts, and I believe they'll all take something from this experience. We're looking forward to getting back after it on Saturday at the Cougars Cave when Valley Forge University comes to Brooklyn."

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, senior Keison McIntosh was masterful, draining eight shots from downtown on his way to finishing with a game-high 26 points. He was extremely efficient, knocking down nine of his 17 attempted shots, while also posting a game-high three steals. For McIntosh, it was his second-highest scoring output as a Cougar, and the fourth time he's knocked down eight trifectas in a Medgar Evers uniform.

Andre Evans Jr., the reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, put forth a hearty 23 minutes of action, scoring 11 points, snatching three rebounds, and adding a pair of assists. He registered two three-point baskets, and converted on three of his four attempts from the charity stripe.

Seven players scored in double figures for Fairfield University, including Jalen Leach and Makai Willis, who each netted 14 points. Leach nailed four shots from beyond-the-arc, while also adding six assists and snatching six boards. Willis added eight rebounds, including three on the offensive glass. Jake Wojcik scored 13 points (5-7 FG, 3-5 3pm FG), and Chris Maidoh added 12, to go along with a game-high three blocked shots. Taj Benning, TJ Long, and Allan Jeanne-Rose all scored 11 points apiece, with Jeanne-Rose collecting a game-high eight assists.

Fairfield University netted the game's first 18 points to set the tone for the evening, eventually catapulting to a commanding 36-6 advantage just 9:30 into the contest. The Stags' edge never dipped below 30 throughout the night, with Fairfield eventually snatching a lead as large as 61 points.

The efficiency of the Stags was just too much for the Cougars to contain. Fairfield University was red hot all evening long, shooting 65.7 percent in the opening half (25-38) and 59.7 for the game (43-72). Fairfield University connected on 15 triples, while also putting on a clinic in the helper category, piling up 38 assists.

There were some positive signs for the Cougars despite the loss. McIntosh, one of three veterans on the team, may finally be heating up. After connecting on just 12 shots across the opening three contests of the season, McIntosh played like a man possessed, draining nine shots, including eight from long range. Additionally, as a team, Medgar Evers shot 37.1 percent from downtown (13-35) after coming into the game converting on just 25.5 percent of its launches from three-point land. Finally, the Cougars collected 15 offensive rebounds, which was a season-high for the club.

Medgar Evers will now have three days before returning to the Cougars Cave for a 2:00pm game against Valley Forge University. The game program will be available electronically this Friday, and live video of the contest will be offered and accessible on the men's basketball 2021-2022 schedule page.
