The Medgar Evers men's basketball team put forth a valiant effort on Friday evening but came up short, dropping a CUNYAC game to the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 93-80. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, Medgar slipped to 2-10 on the 2021-2022 campaign (0-4 CUNYAC), while Baruch catapulted to 9-4 on the year, including an unblemished 3-0 record in conference action.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Dante Simmons registered a double-double, posting career-highs in points with 31 (12-21 FG) and blocks (three), while also snatching 14 caroms (nine on the offensive glass). Additionally, the freshman picked up two assists and swiped a pair of steals. Dimitri Weeks drained seven of his 13 attempts from the hardwood to finish with 17 points and three assists, and Andre Evans Jr. finished in double figures with 10 points. Mousa Sinera did not play in the game due to an injury suffered in the game against CCNY this past Wednesday.

Baruch College was paced by Adnan Bajrami, as he finished with a team-high 30 points (9-20 FG) while grabbing nine rebounds, collecting three assists, and contributing two steals. Mohamed Gueye (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Emil Purisic (13 points, 14 rebounds) both registered double-doubles, and it was Jehmehl Fair adding 11 points and six rebounds.

The Bearcats controlled the pace for a majority of the evening, racing out to a 6-0 lead just 2:40 into the contest. Baruch College led 19-9 with 10:13 remaining in the opening session, but Medgar Evers used a 14-6 run over a span of 5:03 to close the gap to two points (25-23) with 5:10 left on the first half clock. The Bearcats led 34-30 with 2:46 left in the half before finishing the stanza by outscoring the Cougars 11-2 to take a 45-32 edge into the locker room at halftime.

1:51 into the second half, Baruch College took its biggest lead, going up by 17 (53-36). Medgar Evers spent the ensuing 12:54 of action scratching and clawing its way back, eventually pulling to within eight points (76-68) with 5:15 remaining in the CUNY clash. The Bearcats then put together an 8-2 spurt over the next 1:44 of play to go up by 14 (84-70), and the Cougars were unable to recover, as Baruch advanced to pick up the victory.

Shooting efficiency wasn't there for either squad this evening, other than Baruch's 44.4 percent conversion rate from the field (32-72). Medgar Evers shot 37.8 percent for the evening (31-82). Both teams struggled from long range, as the Cougars connected on seven of 33 shots from downtown (21.2 percent), with Baruch missing a whopping 23 shots from beyond the arc (4-27, 14.8 percent). From the charity stripe, Baruch converted on 65.8 percent of its freebees (25-38), while Medgar Evers misfired on 17 free throws (11-28, 39.3 percent).

Baruch College dominated the glass in this one, out-rebounding the Cougars 62-42, but Medgar Evers won the turnover battle, committing only 13 miscues while forcing 22 Bearcats mistakes. The Cougars also showed their tenaciousness getting after the basketball, swiping 11 steals on the night compared to just three for Baruch.

Medgar Evers will now have two days of rest before returning to action on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as the Cougars will travel to Pratt's ARC Arena to take on the Cannoneers in a non-conference game. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
