Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Beavers outlast Cougars 91-89 in CUNYAC battle

Box Score

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team suffered a disappointing loss on Friday evening, getting outlasted by the Beavers of the City College of New York by a score of 91-89. The league clash took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in Harlem, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dripped to 5-12 on the 2021-2022 campaign, including a mark of 2-6 in CUNYAC competition. The Beavers snapped a six game losing skid with the triumph, upping their record to 6-12 on the year (2-7 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, point guard Andre Evans Jr. posted team-highs of 21 points and eight assists, while also tying for the game-high of three steals. The freshman connected on 11 of his 16 attempts from the charity stripe, and he also snatched four rebounds. Junior Mousa Sinera converted on seven of his 10 attempts from the floor, finalizing his evening with 17 points, six rebounds, and three steals, and senior Keison McIntosh drained five triples on his way to registering 15 points on the night. Dante Simmons and Dimitri Weeks contributed 13 and nine points, respectively.

For the Beavers Yassine Sakhi led all players with a game-high 26 points (9-14 FG). He also collected three steals, as well. Daniel Piszczatowski scored 15 points, tied for the game-high of eight rebounds, and added three assists, and Bayame Bah netted 14 points (5-5 FG), snatched seven boards, tied for the game-high of three steals, swatted two shots, and added two assists. Amir Assani registered 14 points and grabbed eight boards while piling six assists, and Dashaun Galloway scored 12 points, contributed a game-high nine assists, and collected five caroms.

The game was knotted at 13-apiece after the opening 6:18 of play, before the Cougars put together an impressive 20-5 run over a span of 4:44 to catapult to a 33-18 lead. That aforementioned spurt was highlighted by McIntosh's stellar shooting from downtown, as the sharpshooter connected on three trifectas during the run.

The Cougars did a solid job of keeping a sizable lead over the Beavers for a short time, owning a 41-31 lead with just 3:08 left in the stanza. CCNY finished the first half strong, though, closing out the session on an 11-2 run to pull to within a point, 43-42, as the teams entered the locker room at halftime. That 11-2 spurt by the Beavers featured a pair of drained triples by Sakhi.

CCNY took the lead (44-43) seven seconds into the second half on a basket by Bah, but the Cougars promptly responded with a 15-2 run to jump back ahead by 12 (58-46). Later in the half, Medgar Evers seemed to be in control of the game, leading 69-59 with 9:31 remaining in the game, but CCNY roared back with a ferocious 18-4 run to leapfrog ahead by a score of 78-73 with 6:31 to go.

The Cougars put together one final push, eventually taking an 83-82 lead on two drained free throws by Evans Jr., but 31 seconds later, the Beavers took the lead for good on a converted layup by Sakhi. CCNY then led 84-83, and was ahead 89-84 with 1:20 to go. Medgar Evers was able to get to within two with 1.8 seconds left, but the Cougars, who were inbounding from the far end of the court on their final possession, weren't able to get a high-percentage shot off. Weeks' attempted game-winner from half court was off the mark, sending the Cougars to a tough defeat.

Both teams shot well from the floor, but City College was especially efficient on the evening, as the Beavers converted on converted on 34 of their 60 attempts for the night (56.7 percent). Medgar Evers shot 44.1 percent from the floor (40-68). Both teams were locked in at the charity stripe. The Beavers drilled 14 of their 18 freebees (77.8 percent), and the Cougars nailed 21 of their 29 attempts from the free throw line (72.4 percent). CCNY held a 39-32 edge in the rebounding department, while also earning 23 assists to Medgar Evers' 15. CCNY held a 5-2 advantage in the swatted shots column, but the Cougars earned 13 steals to the Beavers' nine. Medgar Evers won the turnover battle, committing just 16 miscues while forcing 26 CCNY mistakes.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Manhattan to battle the Hunter College Hawks in what should be another intense CUNYAC contest. Start-time at the Hunter Sportsplex is scheduled for 7:00pm.
