Women's Volleyball defeats York College in four; Cristina Carnegie and Cristal Joseph honored on Senior Night

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team closed out the home portion of the regular season with a thrilling victory, turning back CUNYAC foe York College in a CUNYAC match by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-12, 25-17. With the victory, the Cougars improved to 2-18 on the 2022 campaign (1-6 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals stayed winless at 0-17 (0-7 CUNYAC).

In front of the biggest crowd at the Cougars Cave since March of 2020, the Medgar Evers Department of Athletics took a few moments to honor seniors Cristina Carnegie and Cristal Joseph in a special pre-match ceremony. After PA announcer Joe Tribuzio read some heartfelt sentiments about each senior that included their career statistics and influence on the team, Director of Athletics Chetara Murphy and Head Coach Michell Cadet presented both Carnegie and Joseph with commemorative framed photos and flowers in a show of appreciation for their contributions to the program over the years.

In the victory for Medgar Evers, Britonya Lloyd paced the Cougars with a team-high eight kills to go along with nine digs. Joseph played well on the evening she was honored, registering six kills and a team-high 11 digs, and newcomer Jordan-Taylor Robinson added four kills, nine digs, an assist, and a service ace. Carnegie put forth a very versatile performance in her final home match, contributing three kills, nine digs, and team-highs of seven assists and seven service aces.

Despite the loss for York College, the Cardinals were led by Shamonie Miller, as she notched match-highs of nien kills and 22 digs. Additionally, Andrea Wright contributed seven kills, and Nivar Nadaysia finalized her evening with four kills and six digs. Finally, it was Cherub Autar piling up a match-best 15 assists.

Things looked bleak for the Cougars in the opening stages, as Medgar Evers tailed 8-3 before rallying to score seven straight points to grab a 10-8 advantage. That aforementioned run featured three service aces by Carnegie. Later, with the set tied at 15-all, the teams traded runs. The Cougars notched four straight points to go up 19-15, but the Cardinals stormed back with a 3-0 run to pull to within one at 19-18. Then, with Medgar eventually holding on to a slim 21-19 edge, Medgar Evers ran off four straight points to capture set number one.

In the second set, Medgar Evers held a 20-19 lead late, and looked poised to grab a 2-0 edge in sets, however, the Cardinals had another plans. York scored five consecutive points to go up 24-20. Following a Cougars timeout, Medgar got a point back when Nadaysia served the ball into the net. The Cardinals recovered to win the next point, and essentially, the set, to tie the match 1-1.

York College led 7-6 in the third set, but the Cougars dominated after that, outscoring the Cardinals 19-5 the rest of the way to win it 25-12 and take a 2-1 lead
in sets. In the fourth and final set, the Cougars rallied back from a 9-5 deficit to win it, 25-17. And with that, the Cougars won their first match at home, sending the spirited fans home happy.

The Cougars will play one more match this season, as Medgar Evers will make the short trip to St. Joseph's Brooklyn's Hill Center on Thursday evening to battle the King's College (NY). Start-time for that match is scheduled for 8:30pm.
