Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball drops season opener to SUNY Maritime, 81-56; Dimitri Weeks paces Cougars with 14 points, three assists

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team opened up its 2022-2023 season last night, but the Cougars were defeated in non-conference action, falling to the Privateers of SUNY Maritime by a score of 81-56 at the Riesenberg Gymnasium in Throggs Neck, NY.

Despite the loss for the Cougars (0-1), senior Dimitri Weeks shot the ball well, connecting on six of his 14 attempts from the floor (42.8 percent) to finish with a team-high 14 points. He also tied for the team-high for assists with three, while also snatching two rebounds. Newcomer Richar Frias led all Cougars in minutes played with 33, registering eight points, three assists, two swatted shots, and two steals, and AJ Evans and Nicholas Bocharov added seven points apiece. It was a rather quiet evening for senior Mousa Sinera, as he finalized his evening with just four points, however, he did snatch eight rebounds on the evening, putting him over 700 (704) for his career.

Ryan Donovan led all players on the evening with a ridiculous shooting performance, nailing 50 percent of his attempts from the floor (11-22), including eight of his 11 shots from the charity stripe to finish with a game-high 32 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds, swiped three steals, and added two assists. Theo Noble and Robbie Mitchell finished with 10 points apiece, and Aleksandar Begovic put forth a nice versatile effort, registering six points, eight boards, four assists, and three steals.

The Cougars led for just a short time in this one, as Dante Simmons connected on a triple to give Medgar Evers a 3-2 advantage. That would be the Cougars' only lead, though, as Tyler Anderson's three-point basket started a Privateer surge of eight consecutive points, putting maritime up 10-3 less than four minutes into the non-conference clash. The Privateers went up by as many as 13 in the opening session before taking an 11-point advantage (36-25) into the locker room at halftime.

Medgar Evers stayed within striking distance for a large portion of the second half, trailing by just 15 (63-48) with 7:34 to go, but a 16-5 run by SUNY Maritime put the Privateers in front by a score of 79-53 with less than two minutes to go. Maritime would eventually go on to capture the game by 25 points.

One of the biggest eye-opening statistical differences in this one came via the glass, where the Privateers shockingly out-rebounded Medgar Evers 45-20, including a difference of 16-5 on the offensive side. SUNY Maritime hit on 50 percent of its attempts from the floor (29-58) compared to a 40 percent conversion rate for the Cougars (22-55), and the teams each swiped 11 steals. The Cougars did win the turnover battle, committing 19 miscues while forcing 20, and Medgar Evers nailed eight three-point baskets on the evening (8-22) compared to five for SUNY Maritime (5-15).

The Cougars will return to the court on Thursday evening, as they'll take on the Bears of St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) in their home opener at the Cougars Cave. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
