Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars now over .500 on the road with 83-68 drubbing of Patriots; Weeks scores team-high 21 in victory

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team picked up a solid road victory on Saturday afternoon, shutting down the Patriots of the University of Valley Forge by a score of 83-68. The game took place at the Pit in Phoenixville, PA. With the victory, the Cougars improved to 3-5 on the 2022-2023 campaign, while the Patriots dipped to 1-7 overall.

Senior Dimitri Weeks dazzled for Medgar Evers in its victory, as he knocked down four trifectas, finishing with a team-high 21 points. He also snatched seven boards (four offensive), registered two assists, and swiped a pair of steals. Mousa Sinera notched his fifth double-double of the season, netting 12 points while grabbing 17 rebounds. Last year's CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Andre Evans Jr. contributed 12 points, four rebounds, and three dimes, and veteran Joshua Jean Pierre scored 11 points, collecting seven caroms, and added two steals.

Valley Forge's Jay White led all players with 22 points (8-20 FG), as he nailed four shots from downtown. He also pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds and piled a game-high five dimes. Isaiah Reece connected on six of his seven attempts from the floor to finalize his afternoon with 15 points, and EJ Smith II notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Finally, it was A'Donnius McGill netting 12 points, grabbing seven boards, tallying two assists, and collecting a pair of steals.

Medgar Evers trailed by four points in the early stages (15-11), and was behind 17-14, before the Cougars put together an 11-0 run over a span of 4:09 to take a 25-17 advantage. That run included a converted jumper by Sinera, a drained triple by Tenzin Dayab, a made layup by Richar Frias, a bucket by Weeks, and two made freebees Jean Pierre.

Later in the half, the Cougars held a 31-20 edge, but a 6-0 spurt sliced Medgar's lead to five points, 31-26, with 4:45 remaining in the half. The Cougars' defensive prowess would be on display for the closing stages of the opening session, as Medgar Evers would allow just two points the rest of the way, outscoring the hosts 9-2 over the final 4:45 to take a 40-28 edge at the break.

After the Patriots opened up the second half with a drained three point basket by White to make it 40-31, the Cougars used a 26-7 run over a 6:54 span to build a commanding 66-38 lead with 12:54 left. From that point until the 2:23 mark, Medgar Evers would lead by at least 20 points, before advancing for an impressive, workman-like 83-68 victory.

The Cougars connected on 39.5 percent of their attempts from the floor (30-76), while the Patriots converted on 35.8 percent of their shots (24-67). Medgar Evers dominated on the glass, boasting a healthy 48-37 edge on the glass, and the Cougars also collected nine steals compared to five for the hosts. Both teams kept the miscues at a minimum, with Medgar Evers turning over the ball just 16 times, compared to 17 for the University of Valley Forge.

Medgar Evers will return to action Thursday evening, December 22nd, as the Cougars will head to Pratt Institute's ARC to play Division I St. Francis College (Brooklyn) in an Exhibition contest. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm. Live stats and video links are available on the Cougars 2022-2023 men's basketball schedule page.
