Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bearcats defeat Cougars 94-66 in CUNYAC quarterfinals

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team finalized its 2021-2022 campaign on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 94-66 in the quarterfinals of the CUNYAC Men's Basketball Tournament. With the defeat, the Cougars final record of the season was 6-18. Baruch College ended a three-game losing streak, improving to 18-7 with the victory and advancing to the league semifinals on Wednesday against an opponent to-be-determined.

Despite the loss, the No. 7 seeded Cougars were led by senior Keison McIntosh. In his final game in a Medgar Evers uniform, the Brooklyn, NY native scored a game-high 21 points, connecting on four trifectas while adding four assists. Freshman Dante Simmons put together a fine all-around game, netting 14 points, snatching nine rebounds, tying for the game-high of five steals, and registering four assists, and Joshua Jean Pierre snatched a team-high 10 rebunds.

Jehmehl Fair paced Baruch with a team-high 17 points (7-12 FG) to go along with five rebounds and four dimes. Adnan Bajrami connected on four three-point baskets, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals, and Cameron Burns finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Michael Richards and Mohamed Gueye finalized their afternoons with 12 points apiece.

The contest stayed close in the early stages, with the Bearcats holding a marginal 17-10 edge with 11:17 to go in the opening stanza. An 11-0 run by Baruch, though, catapulted the Bearcats to a 28-10 advantage. That spurt included a pair of converted freebees by Richards, a basket apiece by Gueye, Emil Purisic, and Fair, and a drained trifecta by Bajrami. Baruch would go up by as many as 24 in the opening session (42-18) before taking a 44-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Over the opening 3:20 of the second stanza, Baruch scored 10 straight points to jump ahead 54-23. Later in the half, the Bearcats took their biggest lead, a 34-point edge, and Baruch never led by any less than 24 points throughout the stanza, eventually cruising to convincing quarterfinal round win. It was the seventh straight season in which the Bearcats won the quarterfinal round game of the CUNY tournament.

Baruch was very efficient on the afternoon, shooting 48.6 percent from the floor (34-70) while holding Medgar Evers to just a 31.1 percent conversion rate (23-74). The Bearcats dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Cougars 53-39, while also doubling-up Medgar Evers in the assists column, 22-11. Baruch narrowly won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues to 19 for the Cougars. The Bearcats tallied 13 steals, while Medgar Evers earned 11.

Despite the season finalizing for the Cougars, there is plenty for the Medgar Evers to look back on with pride. Overall, the team earned six CUNYAC weekly awards, including four Rookie of the Week distinctions for Andre Evans Jr, one for Dante Simmons, and a Player of the Week accolade for Mousa Sinera. Sinera eclipsed 695 career rebounds (he now has 696 total for his career), and the team earned two very impressive regular season road victories, defeating the No. 1 (John Jay) and 2 (Baruch) seeds from the 2019-2020 CUNYAC Tournament. That victory over the Bearcats ended Baruch's push for an unblemished CUNYAC mark during this 2021-2022 campaign. Medgar Evers' student-athletes also did very well in the classroom, which is always a source of pride for Head Coach Brian Nigro and his staff. The Cougars will tip off their 2022-2023 season in early November.
