Cougars lose to Bearcats, 84-53, in rematch of 2022 CUNYAC quarterfinal round game

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game on Saturday evening, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 84-53. The contest took place at the ARC Arena in lower Manhattan. With the loss, the Cougars dropped their seventh consecutive game, slipping to 3-12 on the year (0-5 CUNYAC). Baruch won for the ninth time in 10 tries, improving to 12-4 (4-1 in conference action).

Prior to the game, Medgar Evers guard Tenzin Dayab received his 2021-2022 CUNYAC championship ring, as he served as a team manager for the Bearcats last season during their run to a conference crown.

Leading the way for the Cougars was newcomer Maliik Goulbourne, as the guard connected on three shots from downtown, finishing with a team-high 13 points. He also snatched five rebounds, as well. Sophomore Andre Evans Jr. scored 12 points and posted a team-best nine rebounds, and game-highs of five assists and five steals, and Joshua Jean-Pierre scored six points while grabbing nine boards.

Baruch was paced by Devin Nicholson, who dropped-in a game-high 16 points, while registering a team-best four steals, and grabbing three rebounds. Emil Purisic posted a double-double with 12 points, 10 boards, and four assists, and Michael Gannon netted 11 points while grabbing five boards and dropping four dimes, and Sean Donnellan added 10 points.

Playing at the ARC Arena for the third time inside a calendar year, the Cougars and Bearcats tipped off on Baruch's Alumni Day in front of a spirited crowd. The teams exchanged the lead six times in the opening 4:06 of action, the final swing coming when Evans Jr. connected on a trifecta to put Medgar up 11-9.

The Bearcats then ran off 14 consecutive points over a span of 4:46 to catapult ahead by a score of 23-11. That run was highlighted by Nicholson, who led the run with six points.

Medgar Evers was scrappy in attempting to keep the game close, as the Cougars went on a mini 6-0 run to pull to within six (23-17) thanks to three-point baskets by Dimitri Weeks and Nicholas Bocharov. Baruch later led 31-24 with 4:44 left in the half, before running off nine straight points to sprint into the locker room with a 16-point edge, 40-24.

The Bearcats used the momentum they built at the end of the first half and used it to continue their stellar play in the second stanza, beginning the session by scoring five straight points to go up by 21, 45-24. From that point forward, Baruch never led by any less than 17 points, and the Bearcats finished the game on an 11-2 run to win the CUNYAC clash by 31.

Baruch College connected on 40 percent of its attempts from the floor (30-75), while holding the Cougars to a 30.2 percent conversion rate (19-63). The Bearcats were also the more efficient team from the free throw line, connecting on 16 of their 22 attempts (72.7 percent), while Medgar Evers misfired on eight of 12 (33 percent). Baruch held a 52-41 edge on the glass, while also holding advantages in the steals (11-8) and swatted shots (4-1) categories.

The Cougars will return to action on Monday, as the Cougars will play a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee game at the Cougars Cave against Pratt Institute. Start-time for the non-conference clash is scheduled for 3:00pm.
