Cougars swept by Privateers in non-conference action in Throggs Neck, NY

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team lost a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Privateers of SUNY Maritime by scores of 13-25, 14-25, and 11-25. The contest took place at the Riesenberg Gymnasium in Throggs Neck, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to 0-14 on the 2023 campaign, while the host Privateers improved to 7-10.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Jennifer Metra paced her squad with a team-high three kills. She also added six digs, as well. Veteran Quiara Brye Bey's 10 digs, five assists, and two service aces were all team-bests, and Raine Williams contributed six digs and a pair of service aces.

Leading the way for SUNY Maritime was Jessica Mele, as her 12 kills led all players. She also contributed eight digs, which were a team-high. Kelly Kuhn hit .688 for the afternoon (11-0-16), piling 11 kills while also adding a pair of service aces. Ashley Pavarini's 22 assists and eight service aces were both match-highs, and Xieana Rodriguez finished with seven service aces.

The Cougars trailed 8-3 in the opening set before scoring five of the next six points to pull to within one, 9-8. A service ace by Williams, and four errors by the Privateers accounted for the five points. Later, with Maritime up 13-10, the Privateers rattled off five consecutive points to increase their advantage to eight, 18-10. SUNY Maritime's Rodriguez tallied three aces during that spurt. SUNY Maritime never led by less than eight for the remainder of the set, capturing it by 12.

Medgar kept things close in the early stages of set number two, trailing just 11-9 through 20 points. The Privateers then scored 11 of the next 14 points to catapult ahead by a commanding edge of 22-12. SUNY Maritime would advance to solidify a victory in the second set by 11 (25-14).

The Cougars took a 3-2 lead in the final set, using a Williams service ace, and a kill by Metra to do so. Maritime responded by recording six straight points to snatch an 8-3 lead. Medgar Evers was able to inch within three points by scoring three of the ensuing four, but it was all SUNY Maritime from there, with the Privateers outscoring the visitors 16-5 the rest of the way to win the set, and the match.

The Cougars will return to the court on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will host Bard College at the Cougars Cave. Start-time for the non-conference clash is scheduled for 7:00pm.
