Women's soccer opens 2023 campaign with defeat at SUNY Purchase

The Cougars' women's soccer team started their 2023 campaign on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Panthers of SUNY Purchase by a score of 9-1. The match took place in Purchase, NY. While the match served as the season opener for Medgar Evers, the Panthers improved to 4-5-4 with their victory.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, Torey Richards, who was a member of the Cougars' 2022 squad, found the back of the net to give Medgar its first goal of the campaign.

SUNY Purchase senior Jenna Hernandez, who the Panthers honored at halftime, found the back of the net twice for the hosts. Also notching goals on the day were Molly McGarvey, Rebecca Quick, Kate Robinson, Lindita Selmani, Emily Giron, and Alina Vazquez.

McGarvey scored the first goal of the afternoon in this one, taking advantage of a solid pass from Vazquez before tapping the ball home to make it 1-0. The ensuing 12 minutes of action saw the Panthers misfire on four shots, with Cougars netminder Fatou Karamoko registering a save to keep the visitors in the match in the early stages.

With intense rain coming down, the Panthers netted their second goal of the day at 13:37, as McGarvey found McHugh, who blasted the ball home to increase the hosts' edge to 2-0. Hernandez notched the next two goals in the 22nd minute, followed by unassisted strikes from Quick and Robinson at 24:39 and 35:58, respectively, to give Purchase a commanding 6-0 edge.

62 seconds after SUNY Purchase scored its fifth goal, the Cougars broke through, getting on the scoreboard thanks to a Richards goal, as the veteran dribbled through the Panthers defense before depositing the ball in the right side of the net.

The Panthers added one more goal before the first session came to a close, as Selmani scored in the 41st to make it 7-1 in favor of the home squad. After the break, SUNY Purchase added two more goals, courtesy of a free kick conversion by Giron in the 49th minute, and a slasher by Vazquez in the 54th.

Medgar Evers returns to action on Wednesday afternoon, as the Cougars will play their home opener against CUNYAC foe John Jay. The match will take place at Kingsborough Community College, with a start-time of 2:30pm.
