Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nicholas Guillen registers team-high 17 points in Cougars Cave debut; Medgar Evers drops home opener to Maritime, 93-63

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped its home opener on Tuesday evening, falling to the Privateers of SUNY Maritime by a score of 93-63. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers has now dropped three consecutive games, falling to 1-3. SUNY Maritime improved to 2-0 with the victory.

Leading the way for the Medgar Evers despite its loss was freshman Nicholas Guillen. Guillen, playing in his first career game at the Cougars Cave, registered a team-high 17 points (7-20 FG). He also recorded a pair of assists, as well. Another newcomer, Derek Wicker, shot the basketball well, connecting on four of his seven attempts from the floor, including two out of three from downtown. He finished with 12 points and three rebounds. Additionally, Jackson Bartley and Aaron Cotterel finished with six points apiece.

In the victory for the Privateers, SUNY Maritime was paced by Jovan Germain, as he drained seven of his nine attempts from the floor, including four out of five from downtown, to finish with a game-high 22 points. He also sprinkled in three rebounds and three dimes. Tyler Anderson added 13 points, a game-high six assists, three boards, a pair of swatted shots, and two steals, and Jake Murphy finalized his evening with 11 points and three caroms. Aleksandar Begovic scored 10 points while snatching eight boards, and Evan Block finished seven points, six rebounds, and three assists.

The game featured a ton of pendulum swings in the opening 9:30 minutes, with the teams exchanging the four six times, and neither squad building an advantage greater than three points. With the Cougars leading 12-11, SUNY Maritime put together an 8-1 run to snatch a 19-13 advantage with 7:56 to go in the session.  Medgar Evers responded with eight consecutive points over a 66-second span to take a 21-19 edge. Guillen scored all eight points during that spurt for the home team.

After Maritime's Jake Cosgrove sank a free throw to square the game at 21 apiece, the Privateers took the lead for good with 6:13 remaining in the first half when Jake Murphy converted on a fastbreak layup to give his team a 23-21 edge. Maritime would go on to outscore Medgar Evers 18-7 for the remainder of the period, taking a 41-28 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

In the early stages of the second half, the Cougars tried valiantly to stay in the contest, trailing 49-35 with 16:54 remaining. The Privateers then took their biggest lead of the evening, a 21-point edge, following a 7-0 run that was capped by a fastbreak dunk by Begovic. That gave Maritime a 56-35 advantage with 14:58 remaining, and later, a converted three-point basket by Chris Zaveckas catapulted the Privateers to an 81-50 advantage with 7:23 to go. SUNY Maritime would eventually build its lead up to as many as 37 points, before winning the contest, 93-63.

SUNY Maritime converted on 47.9 percent of its attempts from the field (34-71), while also draining nine shots from downtown (9-30, 30 percent). The Privateers put on a clinic from the charity stripe, draining 16 of their 19 attempts there (84.2 percent). On the flip side, Medgar Evers shot 20 for 59 from the floor (33.9 percent), and nailed eight of their 21 launches from downtown (38.1 percent). The Cougars were also terrific from the free throw line, draining 15 of their 21 attempts there (71.4 percent).

The Privateers dominated the glass (51-30), while also winning the turnover battle, committing just 11 miscues, while Medgar Evers finished the evening with 15. Maritime also held edges in steals (9-4), blocks (6-3), and assists (22-10).

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon, as the team will play the first of two matinee home contests during the 2023-2024 campaign. The Cougars will welcome the Patriots of Valley Forge University to Brooklyn, NY, and start-time for the contest is scheduled for 1:00pm.
