Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Shorthanded Cougars drop nail-biter to Cannoneers, 68-65; Michael Perez drains six triples, scores 23 points

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team lost for the sixth time in seven tries, Monday evening falling to non-conference borough foe Pratt Institute by a score of 68-65. The contest took place at the Pratt ARC in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 2-6 on the 2023-2024 campaign, while the Cannoneers squared their record at 5-5.

Pratt Institute's victory over Medgar Evers marks the first time that the Cannoneers have ever beaten the Cougars at the Pratt ARC.

The Cougars, playing without two key pieces of their puzzle in junior Andre Evans Jr. and freshman Nicholas Guillen, got a tremendous performance from sophomore Michael Perez, as he drained six shots from downtown, finishing with a team-high 22 points. Newcomer Derek Wicker added 11 points and six boards, and veteran Dante Simmons scored 10 points while registering game-highs of nine assists and eight rebounds.

Leading the way for Pratt Institute was Cameron Windt, as he poured in a game-high 23 points, draining six triples in the process. He also snatched five rebounds and swatted a pair of shots, as well. Patrick O'Gorman put forth a stellar effort, scoring 20 points, swiping a game-high five steals, tying for the team-high of four assists, and grabbing three rebounds, and it was Justin Caver chipping in with eight points, seven rebounds, four steals, and three dimes.

The Cannoneers snatched an early six-point lead, 10-4, following a converted three-point basket by Windt. Medgar Evers would square the contest at 10-all following consecutive possessions that featured made trifectas by Perez and Wicker. Pratt later had another six-point advantage, 23-17, with 8:45 remaining in the half, but Medgar Evers would once again battle back, putting together a ferocious 12-0 run over a span of 4:36 to catapult ahead by a score of 29-23. That spurt was highlighted by Aaron Cotterel's four points.

The pendulum would then swing in favor of the hosts, as Pratt Institute closed the half on a 7-0 run to take a slim 30-29 advantage as time expired on the first half. That final push by Pratt featured made triples by Windt and Caver, and a converted jumper by O'Gorman.

Medgar Evers came out of the locker room fired-up, going on a 14-4 run in the opening 4:25 of the session to take a 43-34 advantage. Perez accounted for seven of the Cougars' points during that run. Medgar Evers went up by as many as 11 points (48-37) with 13:58 remaining in the game, but a 16-5 Pratt Institute run over a span of 5:23 knotted the contest at 53 apiece.

The Cougars were able to take the lead back, thanks to a converted triple by Perez, and a made jumper by Simmons. That gave Medgar Evers a 58-53 advantage with 7:42 left. Pratt Institute would respond by scoring the next five, tying the game at 58-all on a jumper by Quinn McCormick with 5:31 left.

Later, with the contest tied at 62, the Cannoneers took the lead when Windt nailed a trifecta with 1:42 remaining, pushing Pratt ahead 65-62. 30 seconds later, a Joshua Jean Pierre freebee pulled the visitors to within one (65-63), and Simmons would eventually tie the score by converting on a layup with seven seconds left.

With the non-conference clash knotted at 65 apiece, Pratt Institute raced the ball down the floor and it was once again Windt coming through, as he nailed a long three-point basket to give the Cannoneers a 68-65 advantage. On the Cougars' ensuing possession, a desperation heave from well beyond the half court line by Perez was off target, giving Pratt the dramatic victory.

For the game, the Cannoneers converted on 42.9 percent of their attempts from the floor (24-56), while Medgar Evers hit on 23 of 56 shot attempts (41.1 percent). Pratt held a narrow 36-34 edge on the glass, while also tallying 11 steals to the Cougars' nine. The teams were deadlocked in the assists (19 apiece) and blocks (five each) categories, and Medgar Evers won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues while forcing 20 Pratt mistakes.

The Cougars will look to snap their three-game losing skid on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome North Carolina Wesleyan College to the Cougars Cave. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
