Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sinera posts monstrous double-double (15 points, 23 rebounds), but Bloodhounds hold off Cougars

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team played its final road game of the 2022-2023 campaign, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in CUNYAC action by a score of 105-34. The game took place at the Doghouse in Midtown Manhattan. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 5-19 overall (1-12 CUNYAC), while John Jay improved to 6-18 (5-8 CUNYAC).

Medgar Evers was paced in the game by Mousa Sinera, as he tied for the team-high of 15 points, while also snatching a whopping 23 rebounds. With that output, Sinera boosted his career total to 1,034 rebounds. Weeks connected on three trifectas, finishing with 15 points and a team-high five assists, and Joshua Jean Pierre finalized his afternoon with 12 points and seven boards.

John Jay was led by Garrison Watkins, as the veteran scored a game-high 18 points, while also tying for the team-high of 10 rebounds, and leading all players with six assists. Dan Kenny also posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with a pair of blocks, and Corey Jones Jr. and Jayson Delgado netted 11 points apiece.

The Bloodhounds held leads of 8-0, 27-8, and 42-15 in the opening half, as it looks like John Jay would cruise to an easy victory on their senior day, but the Cougars would make them work for it. The Cougars closed out the first half on a 12-7 run, but the Bloodhounds still held a commanding 49-27 advantage as time expired on the opening half.

When play resumed for the second half, the Medgar Evers outscored the Bloodhounds, 13-8, to trim the deficit down to 57-40, following a Watkins jumper. The Cougars then put together a 7-0 run, courtesy of a hoop by Andre Evans Jr, and five consecutive points by Sinera. That made it 57-47 in favor of John Jay, as the Cougars sliced a once-daunting 27 point deficit to just 10, with 12:37 left.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, Medgar Evers would never trail by less than 10, as John Jay was able to maintain its double-digit advantage, holding on for an impressive 16 points victory (81-65).

John Jay converted on 44.8 percent of its attempts from the floor (30-67), while Medgar Evers nailed 25 of its 70 attempts (35.7 percent). The Cougars lost the game despite dominating on the glass, as Medgar Evers snatched 51 rebounds compared to 41 for the Bloodhounds. Both teams took care of the basketball well, with Medgar Evers committing just 14 miscues, while John Jay had 13. The Bloodhounds dished 19 assists to the Cougars' 12, while also swatting five shots to Medgar Evers' four.

The Cougars will close out their 2022-2023 campaign on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome Lehman College to the Cougars Cave for a CUNYAC contest. Start-time for the conference clash is scheduled for 8:00pm. Prior to the game, the Medgar Evers Department of Athletics will honor its four graduating seniors, including Mousa Sinera, Dimitri Weeks, Dante Simmons, and Omar Bassiouni.
