Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Quezada posts 12th double-double, eclipses 100 career blocks as Cougars fall in season finale

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team wrapped up its 2022-2023 campaign on Tuesday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by a score of 79-40. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars finalized their year at 2-21 (0-14 CUNYAC), while the Lightning improved to 9-16 (5-9 CUNYAC). Lehman College, which earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Tournament, will continue its season Saturday in the tourney's quarterfinals at No. 3 Hunter.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, standout Sheily Quezada posted yet another double-double, her 12th this season, as she netted a team-high 16 points and posted game-highs of 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots. With those seven swatted shots, Quezada finalized her 2022-2023 campaign with 102 blocks, which currently leads the nation. Additionally, she is only 10 blocks away from setting the school record, which is currently held by Shauntelle Nelson (2005-2009, 111 blocks). In addition to Quezada's stellar evening, Mariame Gueye also scored in double figures, as she netted 10 points while adding a team-high five assists and pulling down five rebounds.

For the Lightning, Lehman was paced by Brianna Barnes, as she put forth a fantastic effort, scoring a game-high 44 points in just 27 minutes of action. She connected on 18 of her 26 attempts from the floor, as well as eight of 11 shots from the charity stripe. Her 12 rebounds were a team-high, and she tied for the game-high in steals with seven. Ramatoulaye Diallo added 17 points (8-18 FG), a game-high eight assists, seven steals, and six rebounds, and Barbara Valentin contributed seven points, five boards, and four steals.

Lehman College raced out to an early 16-3 advantage in the opening 4:24 of action, with Barnes accounting for 12 of those 16 points. After Gueye connected on a triple to slice the Cougars' deficit to 10, Lehman started another run, going on a 5-0 spurt to take a 21-6 edge. Following a converted free throw by Gueye and a drained trey by Halle Haughton brought Medgar Evers to within 11 (21-10), the Lightning finished the period by outscoring the hosts 8-3 to take a 31-13 lead after one period.

Made jumpers by Gueye and Quezada to start the second quarter pulled Medgar Evers back within 14 points (31-17), but Lehman responded with eight consecutive points (courtesy of three straight buckets by Diallo, and a hoop by Megan Simmons). That made it 39-17 in favor of the visitors, and Lehman's 48-25 edge at the half was its largest of that game at that juncture of the contest.

The Lightning put the game away with a dominant third quarter, outscoring Medgar Evers 27-4 in the period. The Cougars were held to just one field goal over the final 9:25 of the quarter, and Lehman waltzed into the fourth quarter up 75-29. The Cougars did outscore Lehman 11-4 in the final 10 minutes, but the Lightning still won the game by a convincing 39 points (79-40).

Lehman shot just a clip below 40 percent for the evening (34-87, 39.1 percent), while the Cougars connected on 16 of their 53 attempts (30.2 percent). The Lightning commanded the boards, snatching 58 rebounds, while the Cougars earned 40 caroms. Lehman dished 27 assists compared to 12 for the hosts, and the Lightning won the turnover battle, committing 21 miscues, while Medgar Evers had 41.

Despite a challenging 2022-2023 campaign, there are many positives that the Medgar Evers College women's basketball team can take into next season. Rookie Sheily Quezada took the conference by storm this season, as mentioned above, her 102 blocked shots currently lead NCAA Divison III and CUNY. In Addition, she was fourth in CUNY in rebounds per contest (10.8), seventh in scoring (14.3 PPG), and seventh in total steals (77). She will only continue to improve, making her the team's top foundational piece for 2023-2024. Mariame Gueye, who played in all 22 games, starting 20 of them, could return for her senior season, and she'll provide veteran leadership and stability for the squad. Freshman Jennifer Metra, who led the team in assists (49), and was second on the squad in rebounding (6.8 RPG) and total steals (46) should be back to provide some reliability at the point guard position, and Halle Haughton, who showed some promise after joining the team late in the season, could provide some scoring. Camaya Sealy, a tough presence in the middle with a knack for rebounding the basketball, could be back in the fold, as well. These aforementioned pieces, as well as the inevitable recruits that could join the fray, could make Medgar Evers a team to watch in 2023-2024!
