Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's volleyball dazzles in opener, defeating CUNYAC foe Brooklyn College in three sets

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team started its season on a winning note, turning back the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC match by scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-18 Thursday evening. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. While the match served as the season opener for the Cougars (1-0, 1-0 CUNYAC), the Bulldogs dipped to 4-6 with the defeat (0-1 CUNYAC).

Leading the way for the Cougars was veteran Sebastiann Perez, as the senior hit .407 on the evening, leading all players with 14 kills. He also tied for the match-high of 10 digs, while notching a match-high five service aces. Newcomer Carlos Abreu registered eight kills while adding 10 digs, and Louis Caiola finalized his evening with eight kills while hitting .333. Senior setter Austin Romeo piled a whopping 30 assists on the night to lead all players (he recorded nine digs, as well), and Isaac Akindipe added four kills, four service aces, and a pair of digs.

Despite the loss for Brooklyn College, the Bulldogs were led by Aziz Abdusamiev, as he posted a team-high seven kills to go along with three digs. Armand Kaolshi added five kills, and setter Tommy Min piled team-highs of 17 assists and nine digs.

The Bulldogs held a 4-1 lead in the opening set, until three consecutive points by the Cougars tied things up at four apiece. The set would feature three more ties, until Medgar Evers eventually took a commanding 17-11 advantage. Brooklyn battled back to make things close, pulling to within three, 22-19, but the Cougars registered the final three points of the set (courtesy of a Min service error, an ace by Perez, and an attack error by Jiaian Flanders) to win it, 25-19.

The second set remarkably featured 11 ties through the first 22 points, with neither squad taking more than a two point lead during that span. After tying the match at 11, the Cougars notched four more points, thanks to three services aces by Perez and an attack error by Armand Kaloshi, to take a 15-11 edge. Brooklyn would then go on an 11-5 run to take a 22-20 advantage late, and the Bulldogs looked poised to tie the match at one set apiece.

Medgar Evers finished the second set strong. After scoring three straight points to go up 23-22, a Jubril Okunlola service error tied the match at 23 apiece. An attack error by Brooklyn's Kaloshi, and a service ace by Romeo gave Medgar a thrilling 25-23 victory in set number two.

Using the momentum of winning a hard-fought second set, the Cougars took leads of 4-0, 8-1, and 12-4 to start the third and final set. The Bulldogs worked to close the gap to 20-16, but Medgar Evers slammed the door by scoring five of the set's final five points to win the match.

The Cougars hit .187 on the evening, while the Bulldogs hit just .026, but the difference in aces played a key role in the match, as Medgar Evers piled 12 aces, while Brooklyn was only able to notch just one, and that came late in the third set.

Medgar Evers will look to make it two victories in a row to start the 2022-2023 season, as they'll stay home to take on the Lightning of Lehman College in another CUNYAC match. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
