Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Sebastiann Perez registers match-high 12 kills, but Lehman deals Medgar Evers first defeat of 2023

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2022-2023 campaign on Tuesday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by scores of 17-25, 13-25, and 23-25. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to 1-1 on the season (1-1 CUNYAC), while Lehman College improved to 5-6 (1-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, the Cougars were led by senior Sebastiann Perez, as he registered a match-high 12 kills to go along with four digs and a block. Carlos Abreu recorded eight kills and match-highs of nine digs and three service aces, and Austin Romeo piled a team-high 21 assists to go along with four digs.

Lehman College's attack was led by Ray Rodriguez, as he tallied a team-high 10 kills, hitting .444 in the process, while also registering five digs. Emmanuel Oladosu contributed six kills, hitting .857 on the evening, and Andrew Figueroa added five kills and a pair of service aces. Setter Christian Agudo's 21 assists led all players. He also recorded three kills and three digs, as well.

The first set of the evening was knotted at 11 apiece, but four consecutive points by Lehman College gave the Lightning a 15-11 advantage, and the visitors wouldn't relinquish that advantage, outscoring the hosts 10-6 the rest of the set to win it 25-17. The Lightning dominated the second set, winning it 25-13 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in sets.

Medgar Evers looked poise to win the third set, holding a 10-6 lead, but Lehman scored four straight points to tie things at 10 apiece. The teams battled, with neither squad taking more than a two point lead until late in the set, when Lehman snatched a 24-21 edge. The Cougars used two straight points (courtesy of a ball-handling error by Lehman's Christopher Mata, and a kill by Abreu) to slice Medgar's deficit to a point at 24-23. On the Cougars ensuing serve, though, Kelcity Blacky would serve it into the net, ending the match.

Lehman College hit an impressive .339 for the match, committing only nine attack errors on the evening, while the Cougars hit .000 (22-22-73). The Lightning recorded 24 digs compared to Medgar's 22, and the Cougars held a slim margin in service aces, recording four to Lehman's three.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Thursday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Purchase, NY to take on the Panthers of SUNY Purchase. Start-time for that non-conference contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
