Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Cougars stay competitive in first set before suffering sweep at Hunter College

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team dropped its third consecutive match, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by scores of 14-25, 11-25, and 5-25. The match took place at the Hunter Sportsplex in New York, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 3-5 on the 2023 campaign (1-4 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to 6-5, and stayed unblemished in conference action at 4-0.

Despite the defeat, the Cougars were paced by senior Sebastiann Perez, as he turned in a solid performance with a team-high eight kills to go along with five digs. Freshman Carlos Abreu added five kills and a team-high six digs, and senior setter Austin Romeo notched a team-best 14 assists.

For the streaking Hawks, Andrew Estiverne's 15 kills led all players, as the standout hit .700 for the match (15-1-20). He also contributed three digs, three block assists, and a pair of helpers. Ted Kim and Matisse Lee-Maarek registered six kills apiece, and Gabe Mendoza finalized his evening with a perfect hitting percentage (5-0-5) while tying for the match high of seven digs. Finally, Morgan Cooper's 28 assists and seven service aces were both match highs, and he also compiled seven assists.

The Cougars kept things competitive in the first set. Medgar Evers trailed 12-7 early before registering three consecutive points to pull to within two at 12-10. Those points came courtesy of a kill by Perez, and consecutive attack errors by Estiverne and Kim. Later, with Hunter holding on to a slim 13-11 edge, the Hawks essentially ended any chance of a Medgar Evers first set victory, as the hosts ran off six straight points to take a commanding 19-11 lead. Kim had a pair of kills during the run, and Onyeka Onaga and Estiverne contributed a kill apiece as well. After that run, Hunter closed the set by outscoring the visitors 6-3 to cap the first set triumph.

Hunter used the momentum from the strong finish in the previous set to race out to an 8-0 edge in the second. Niro Osbourne notched a pair of service aces during that spurt, while Estiverne and Mendoza registered two kills apiece. The other two points came courtesy of Cougars attack errors. Later, after going up 12-2, Hunter led by double digits the rest of the set, eventually taking a 15 point edge (21-6) before going on to win set two by 14.

The Hawks dominated set number three, winning it 25-5.

Hunter College hit .508 for the match (38-5-65), while the Cougars hit .000 (15-15-63). The Hawks compiled 30 digs compared to 18 for Medgar Evers, and Hunter held a 12-1 edge in the service aces category.

Medgar Evers will strive to get back into the win column this Saturday afternoon, as the team travels to Annadale-on-Hudson, NY to battle the Raptors of Bard College in non-conference action. Start-time for the clash at the Stevenson Athletic Center is scheduled for 12:00pm.
