Despite incredible set three comeback, Cougars drop CUNYAC clash to Lightning

The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team suffered a CUNYAC defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by scores of 18-25, 14-25, 25-23, and 14-25. The match took place at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the loss, the Cougars have now dropped five straight, dipping to 3-7 on the season (1-5 CUNYAC), while Lehman improved to a mark of 10-6 on the 2022-2023 campaign (4-3 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, Sebastiann Perez continued his incredible senior campaign, leading all players with 16 kills, hitting .200 in the process (16-6-50). He also added 13 digs while contributing three assists, as well. Freshman Carlos Abreu finalized his evening with nine kills and a match-high 18 digs, and senior setter Austin Romeo's 23 assists were a team-best.

Lehman College was paced by Miguel Gonzalez, as he registered a team-high 11 kills while piling 12 digs. Ray Rodriguez and Andrew Figueroa notched seven kills apiece, with Rodriguez contributing a match-high five service aces. Christopher Gil finished with six kills, and Christian Agudo finished with a match-high 31 assists and a team-best 15 digs. 

After holding an early 6-5 lead, the Cougars found themselves knotted at seven apiece with the Lightning in the opening set. Lehman College then registered 10 of the next 12 points to snatch a commanding 17-9 advantage. Later, with the hosts owning a 23-13 edge, Medgar Evers scored three straight points to stay alive, thanks to a kill apiece by Louis Caiola and Abreu, and an attack error by Lehman's Emmanuel Oladuso. The CUNYAC foes would then split the next four points, with the Lightning putting a cap on the 25-18 first set victory when Gonzalez slammed home a kill.

The Cougars kept the second set close for a while, finding themselves trailing just 14-12. The Lightning would than increase that edge to seven, scoring the next five points to grab a 19-12 advantage. An Agudo service ace, and a kill apiece by Figueroa and Gil highlighted that Lehman run. The Lightning wouldn't lead by less than six points for the remainder of the set, going on to capture it, 25-14.

Medgar Evers showed tremendous heart in the third set, rallying back from two seven point deficits (16-9 and 22-15) to force a fourth set. Down 22-15, the Cougars' posed a ferocious rally, notching eight consecutive points to take a 23-22 edge. Perez had two kills, Abreu registered a kill and a service ace, and Lehman had four attack errors during that aforementioned spurt. After the Lightning tied the match at 23, the Cougars completed the incredible comeback thanks to back-to-back kills by Perez. 

Lehman College didn't let the collapse in the third set affect their play during the fourth, as the Lightning raced out to leads of 4-0 and 6-1 in the early stages. Lehman later held a modest 13-10 lead, before scoring 12 of the set's final 16 points to win the set and the match. The Lightning notched the final five points of the match, thanks to three service aces by Rodriguez, and a pair of attack errors by the Cougars.

The Lightning hit .154 for the match (41-23-117), while the Cougars hit .042 (32-27-120). Lehman held a slight 52-47 edge in digs, and the Lightning notched 13 service aces compared to one for Medgar Evers.

The Cougars will look to get back in the win column on Thursday evening, as Medgar will travel to the Nat Holman Gymnasium in upper Manhattan to battle CUNYAC foe CCNY. Start-time for the conference clash is scheduled for 7:00pm.
