Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Cougars push Beavers to their limits, but still suffer sweep in CUNYAC clash

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team gave the Beavers of CCNY all they could handle on Thursday evening, but the Cougars came up short, falling by scores of 21-25, 21-25, and 21-25 in CUNYAC action. The conference clash took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in Upper Manhattan. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 3-8 on the 2023 campaign (3-8 CUNYAC), while the Beavers improved to 9-3 on the year (4-3 in conference action).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Medgar Evers was led by Sebastiann Perez once again, as the senior ace led all players with 14 kills and 15 digs. Freshman Carlos Abreu finalized his evening with eight kills and three digs, and first-year players Louis Caiola and Isaac Akindipe contributed three kills apiece. Finally, it was senior setter Austin Romeo piling a team-best 25 assists to go along with five digs and a match-high three solo blocks.

CCNY was standout Prabodh KC, as he hit .391 on the evening, registering a team-high 13 kills (13-4-23), while also leading all Beavers with nine digs. Tenzin Tsepak notched six kills while only committing one hitting error (6-1-8, .625), and Reng Chen added five kills, as well. Setter Jeffrey Celis posted match-highs of 27 assists and three service aces. He also collected seven digs. Finally, it was Edwin Gayton and Ricky Li recording eight and seven digs, respectively.

Medgar Evers led 6-4 in the opening set before the Beavers ran off nine consecutive points to jump ahead 13-6. Tsepak, Chen, and Celis notched a kill apiece during that spurt. After that 9-0 run, CCNY committed four consecutive attack errors, as the Cougars pulled to within three at 13-10. The pendulum then swung the host school's way, as the Beavers scored the next four points (courtesy of kills by KC and Chen, a service ace by Tsepak, and an attack error by Kelcity Blacky) to take a 17-10 advantage.

Late in the first, Medgar Evers found itself trailing 23-19, before scoring two consecutive points via a pair of kills by Perez to pull to within two at 23-21. CCNY then closed out the set after Akindipe and Perez committed consecutive hitting errors, as the Beavers won 25-21 to take a 1-0 lead in sets.

Despite trailing 9-5, 12-8, and 15-11 in the second set, Medgar Evers continued to claw back, pulling to within one (17-16) after putting together a 5-2 run. Perez and Abreu registered a kill apiece during that aforementioned run. Fast forwarding to the latter stages of the set, CCNY found itself in familiar territory up 23-19, but just as they did in the opening set, Medgar Evers scored two straight points (via a service error and an attack error by the Beavers) to slice the home school's edge to two, 23-21. The second set would finalize in symbolic fashion, with the Beavers scoring two straight after Akindipe committed a hitting error, and Chen registered an ace. That gave CCNY a 25-21 victory, and a commanding 2-0 lead in sets.

In the third and final set of the evening, things looked promising for Medgar Evers, as the Cougars earned seven of the set's first nine points to jump ahead 7-2. Medgar later led 12-8, but the Beavers used a 4-0 spurt to tie the match at 12-all. That run by CCNY included a kill by KC, an attack error by Perez, and consecutive service aces by Celis. The matched stayed incredibly competitive, featuring, featuring eight more times, the latter of those knots being a 21-21 tie. The Beavers would then close out the sweep by notching the final four points of the set (and the match), thanks to an ace by Celis, and a kill apiece by KC, Cristian Canela, and Antonio Oliveira-Nurse.

The Beavers were more efficient attacking the ball, hitting .160 for the evening (34-19-94) compared to Medgar Evers' .019 hitting percentage (28-26-105). CCNY held an 8-3 edge in the service aces category, and the Beavers recorded 35 digs compared to 28 for the visitors.

The Cougars will return to the court on Saturday afternoon, as Medgar Evers will take to the road to face the Bulldogs in a CUNYAC Battle of Brooklyn. Start-time for the pivotal conference battle is scheduled for 12:00pm.
