Sebastiann Perez notches match-high 20 kills, but Cougars drop five-setter to Bulldogs

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team suffered a tough loss on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars were outlasted by the Brooklyn College Bulldogs at the West Quad Gymnasium by scores of 26-24, 18-25, 25-18, 13-25, and 10-15. With the defeat, Medgar Evers has now dropped seven straight matches, falling to 3-9 on the 2023 campaign (1-7 CUNYAC), while the Bulldogs improved to 6-11 (2-6 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Sebastiann Perez was marvelous for the visitors, registering a match-high 20 kills while also piling 11 digs and adding a service ace. Freshman Carlos Abreu added 13 kills and a match-high 27 digs, and Louis Caiola and Isaac Akindipe contributed three kills apiece. Finally, it was senior setter Austin Romeo tying for the match-high 37 assists. 

Brooklyn College was paced by Tommy Min, as the standout hit .390 for the afternoon, registering a team-high 18 kills while committing just two attack errors in 41 attempts. He also added seven digs and a match-high two service aces. Fidel Maldonado, Yinuo Xhang, and Jiaian Flanders all tallied six kills apiece, with Maldonado also adding 10 digs and three total blocks. Dion Csikortos collected a match-high 16 digs, and it was David Lema tying for the match-high of 37 assists while also adding 10 digs.

In the opening set, Medgar Evers led by as many as seven points (14-7), but Brooklyn College battled back to take a 21-20 edge. After the Cougars tied the set thanks to a service error by Zhang, the Bulldogs notched two consecutive points, courtesy of a Perez attack error, and a service ace by Lema, to jump ahead 23-21. Medgar Evers responded with two straight points, as Perez tallied a kill, and Maldonado committed an attack error, as the match was once again knotted, 23-all. After Brooklyn's Min registered a kill to give the Bulldogs a 24-23 edge, Medgar Evers captured the set by registering three straight points, thanks to a kill by Caiola, and attack error by Aziz Abdusamiev, and a kill by Abreu.

The Cougars' biggest lead of the second set was three points, which they owned twice, 5-2, and 6-3. Brooklyn College went on a 17-9 run to grab a 20-15 lead, but the Cougars kept things close, scoring three straight points via a service error by Zhang, a bad set by Csikortos, and a kill by Perez. That brought the visitors to within two points, but the Bulldogs closed out set two with five straight points, thanks to a Kelcity Blacky service error, and four consecutive attack errors by Perez. After two sets, the match was tied, 1-1.

The Cougars bounced back to win the third set, rallying back from a 10-8 deficit. At one point during the set, Medgar Evers trailed 13-12, before running off four straight points to catapult ahead, 16-13. A service error by Min, a pair of attack errors by Maldonado, and a service ace by Perez accounted for those four aforementioned points. 

After a Perez service error brought Brooklyn to within two (16-14), the Cougars scored three straight, via a kill by Abreu, and consecutive attack errors by Zhang and Kaloshi, to take a 19-14 edge. For the remainder of the set, the Cougars never led by any less than four points, closing it out with a pair of kills by Akindipe and Perez. 

Brooklyn College dominated the fourth set, racing out to a 12-4 advantage, and never leading by less than five points for the remainder of the set. In the latter stages of the fourth, the Bulldogs led 21-13 and closed it out by scoring four consecutive points, thanks to a kill my Maldonado, an attack error by Caiola, a kill by Flanders, and an attack error by Akindipe.

In the fifth and deciding set, Brooklyn led 5-2, before three straight Bulldog attack errors (two by Flanders and one by Maldonado) tied the match at five-all. Brooklyn then earned seven straight points to take a 12-5 lead. Zhang, Csikortos, and Flanders each registered a kill during that run. Later, leading 14-10, the Bulldogs closed out the set (and the match) when Min slammed a ball home to finish the victory.

Brooklyn College hit just .090 for the match (44-31-144), while Medgar Evers' hitting percentage was in the negative (40-43-135, -.022). The Cougars earned 61 digs compared to 51 for Brooklyn, and the Bulldogs held a 6-2 edge in the service aces category.

Medgar Evers will look to snap their skid on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars welcome the struggling York College Cardinals to the Cougars Cave for another CUNYAC clash. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
