The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match last night at Baruch, falling to the Bearcats by scores of 8-25, 17-25, and 20-25. The match took place at the ARC Arena in New York, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 3-10 on the 2023 campaign (1-8 CUNYAC), while Baruch improved to 11-9 on the year (7-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, the Cougars were paced by first-year player Louis Caiola, as he registered a team-high five kills on a .182 attack percentage. Senior Sebastiann Perez added four kills, and freshman Carlos Abreu's eight digs were a match-high. Finally, it was senior setter Austin Romeo contributed a team-high 11 assists on the evening.

In the victory for the Bearcats, Baruch was led by the stellar effort of Jack Centeno, who was nearly perfect on the evening. The standout notched a match-high seven kills while recording an .875 attack percentage (7-0-8). His five service aces also led all layers, and he finished with five digs, as well. Andrew Ubanwa hit .111, finalizing his evening with six kills, three block assists, and a pair of digs, and Michael Higgins and Haoxin Hu recorded five kills apiece. Defeng Han's whopping 29 assists led all players, and Ari Osmanaj added a match-high five block assists.

Baruch set the tone of the match early, racing out to a 7-0 lead. Osmanaj, Ubanwa, and Centeno contributed a kill apiece during that opening run. The Bearcats continued to stay on the accelerator, taking a commanding 11-2 advantage, which prompted Medgar Evers to utilize a timeout. Later in the set, with Baruch holding a comfortable 19-8 lead, the hosts finished the set with six consecutive points to take a 1-0 lead.

Medgar Evers started fast in the second set, taking leads of 3-0 and 5-2 in the early stages. Two of those five aforementioned points came courtesy of Caiola, who registered a pair of kills, and Romeo contributed a service ace during the spurt. Four consecutive Baruch points catapulted the Bearcats ahead, 6-5, before an Ubanwa service error knotted the second set at six apiece.

Later in the set, with the conference foes knotted at nine apiece, Medgar Evers scored three straight, courtesy of a service error by Han, and consecutive attack errors by JuanCarlos Henriquez and Ubanwa. The Cougars led 12-9, but the Bearcats once again raged back, going on a 5-1 run to snatch a 14-13 edge. An attack error by Hu tied the set at 14-all.

Later, with Baruch holding on to a slim 16-15 lead, the Bearcats came alive to finish the set strong, outscoring the pesky visitors 9-2 the rest of the way to take a commanding 2-0 lead in sets. A majority of those nine aforementioned Baruch points were courtesy of Cougars miscues, as Medgar Evers had five attack errors and a bad set during that period of the match.

In the third and final set, Baruch College held a 9-6 lead, before a Kelcity Blacky kill, attack error by Osmanaj, and a service ace by Abreu tied the match at nine apiece. The turning point of the set came later, when, with the Bearcats leading 16-13, Baruch would score five straight points to take a 21-13 advantage. All five of those points during that run came via kills, with Hu leading the way with two, and Henriquez, Ubanwa, and Carlos Rodriguez adding one apiece.

It appeared as though Medgar Evers might put together a miracle finish to the third set, as the Cougars fought off match-point for Baruch three times. The Bearcats led 24-17 before a service error by Zachary Yao, and consecutive attack errors by Vulkasin Bozic and Henriguez pulled the visitors to within four at 24-20. Blacky would then serve the ball into the net, however, ending the set, and the match.

Baruch College hit a staggering .562 in the opening set (10-1-16), finishing with an attack percentage of .264 for the match (33-14-72). After struggling with their hitting in the first two sets (-.231 and -.227), the Cougars fared solidly in the third, earning a .125 percentage (7-5-16). For the match, Medgar Evers hit in the negative (-.118). Baruch notched 10 service aces compared to two for the Cougars, and the Bearcats totaled 14 block assists, while the Cougars had just one solo block.
