Medgar Evers splits pair of non-conference matches, beating Cannoneers before falling to Chargers

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating non-conference borough for Pratt Institute in three sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-23), before turning around and dropping a three-setter to Lancaster Bible by scores of 13-25, 16-25, and 12-25. The matches took place at the Pratt ARC in Brooklyn, NY. With the output, the Cougars are now 4-11 on the 2023 campaign. Pratt dipped to 2-14 with the loss, while the Chargers improved to 15-9.

In the Cougars' victory against Pratt, Medgar Evers was led by the stellar effort of senior Sebastiann Perez, as he posted a match-high 20 kills while earning a .302 attack percentage (20-7-43). He also added 10 digs while sprinkling in a pair of service aces. Freshmen Carlos Abreu and Isaac Akindipe added eight kills apiece, with Abreu also notching a match-high 22 digs to go along with four assists, and Akindipe contributing three block assists. Louis Caiola registered four kills, and senior setter Austin Romeo led all players with 36 assists, to go along with 13 digs. 

Jason Raymond led Pratt's attack, as he finalized his afternoon with a team-high seven kills, while also notching six digs. Max Wang finished with five kills, a team-high 12 digs, and three assists, and Devaun Longley, Brooks Reid, and Eli Toker contributed three kills apiece. Reid also led all Cannoneers with 13 assists, while recording nine digs.

Medgar Evers raced out to an early 7-0 lead in the opening set, getting a kill apiece by Perez, Akindipe, and Kelcity Blacky during that run. Later, the Cougars held a seemingly comfortable 18-10 advantage, but the Cannoneers put together a ferocious rally, registering six consecutive points to slice the visitors' lead to two points, 18-16. That spurt featured kills by Toker and Raymond, as well as three Cougar attack errors, and a set error.

Medgar Evers halted Pratt's momentum with consecutive kills by Akindipe and Abreu to take a 20-16 lead. The non-conference borough foes then exchanged the next four points, before the Cannoneers scored two straight to make it 22-20, Medgar. A clutch kill by Abreu gave the Cougars some breathing room, putting them up 23-20, before an attack error by Perez brought the hosts to within two. The Cougars then put the finishing touches on the set with consecutive points, thanks to a kill apiece by Perez and Akindipe.

Leading 5-3 in the early stages of the second set, Medgar Evers earned four consecutive points (via a kill and service ace by Akindipe, a bad set by Brooks, and a kill by Caiola) to snatch a 9-3 edge. Pratt Institute responded with four points of its own to pull to within two at 9-7. 

The Cougars held a four point edge five times over the next 14 total points scored, but the Cannoneers kept things close, as Pratt found itself down just a point, 18-17, in the late stages of the match. Medgar Evers finished the second set strong, outscoring the hosts 7-2 the rest of the way to secure the set, and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Those aforementioned seven points were highlighted by Perez, as he accounted for three of the seven points with two kills and a service ace.

In the third and final set of the match, the Cougars put together an impressive rally to win it. Trailing Pratt Institute 11-6, Medgar Evers scored five consecutive points to tie the set at 11 apiece. That run featured a kill apiece by Romeo, Perez, and Akindipe, and two hitting errors by Wang. From there, neither squad took more than a one point advantage until the Cannoneers snatched a 20-18 edge late in the set. Following a Medgar Evers timeout, the Cougars once again rallied, getting a kill from Caiola, and benefiting from a bad set by Reid, as the set was knotted at 20-all.

After an Akindipe hitting error gave the hosts a slim 21-20 edge, the Cougars scored three straight via a kill by Perez, a kill by Akindipe, and another kill by Perez. The Cougars led 23-21 at that juncture, and later led 24-22, before Pratt stayed alive in the match thanks to a kill by Raymond. Medgar Evers then closed out the set and the match when Carlos Abreu slammed a ball home to secure the victory for the Cougars.

For the match, the Medgar Evers hit a solid .200 (43-21-110), while Pratt Institute earned an attack percentage of .080 (21-13-100). The Cougars piled 54 team digs, while the Cannoneers had 36, and the Cougars held a slim 6-5 edge in the service aces category.

In the Cougars' loss to the Chargers, Perez led all players with seven kills following his incredible effort against Pratt. He also contributed five digs while notching a team-high two service aces. Abreu registered five kills and a team-high six digs, and Romeo led all Cougars with 10 kills, while also adding three digs.

Three players tied for the team-high of six kills for Lancaster Bible, including Hunter Davis, Christian Herr, and Dawson Forney. Herr's 15 assists was also a match-high, and he also added three service aces and three black assists. Ben Latham finished with five kills, while Jake Rotelle and Michael Myers registered four apiece. Finally, it was Elijah Heyworth finishing his afternoon with 12 assists.

Lancaster Bible led 6-3 in the opening set, before staging an impressive 9-0 run to take a commanding 15-3 advantage. Forney and Rotelle registered two kills apiece during that run, with Myers also adding one, too. Later, with the Chargers leading 21-5, a 7-2 Cougars run brought Medgar to within 11 at 23-12, but Lancaster Bible notched two of the final three points of the set, with the latter point being earned via a kill by Davis. Lancaster Bible won set one, 25-13.

Leading 9-8 in the second set, the Chargers ran off five consecutive points to snatch a 14-8 advantage. A pair of Myers service aces and a kill by Herr highlighted that aforementioned run. The Cougars kept things close, notching three straight points (via a kill and service ace by Perez, and a kill by Abreu) to slice the Chargers' edge to three at 14-11. 

Later, with Lancaster Bible leading 17-13, the Chargers scored eight of the final 11 points of the set to win it, 25-16. Rotelle and Myers registered two kills apiece during that final spurt.

The Chargers raced out to a 4-0 advantage in the third and final set, and built that advantage up to 10, taking a commanding 15-5 edge. Consecutive points by the Cougars (via a Heyworth service error, and an attack error by DJ Omogrosso) pulled Medgar Evers to within eight (15-7), but five consecutive points by Lancaster Bible pushed the Chargers' edge to 13 (20-7). Herr recorded two kills during that spurt, with Latham also adding one. Later, with the Chargers holding a 23-12 edge, Lancaster Bible captured the set, and the match, with two straight points, via a kill by Davis, and a bad set by Abreu.

Lancaster Bible hit .329 for the match (36-12-73), while the Cougars hit in the negative, earning a percentage of -.033 (13-15-60). The Chargers piled 16 service aces compared to Medgar Evers' two, and Lancaster Bible also had 16 block assists, while the Cougars registered just one solo block. 

Medgar Evers will have Sunday off before returning to the Cougars Cave Monday evening, as the Cougars will welcome Hunter College to Brooklyn, NY for a CUNYAC match. Start-time for that conference clash is scheduled for 7:00pm.
