Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Bloodhounds hit .325 (35-10-77), defeat Cougars in three sets in CUNYAC contest

The Medgar Evers men's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC match on Tuesday evening, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by scores of 17-25, 11-25, and 21-25. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar dipped to 3-4 on the 2023 campaign (1-3 CUNYAC), while the Bloodhounds improved to 9-5 (3-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, standout Sebastiann Perez tied for the match-high of 10 kills, hitting .217 in the process (10-5-23). He also contributed six digs, as well. Freshman Carlos Abreu notched seven kills while adding a match-high 10 digs, and senior setter Austin Romeo led all players with 19 digs while sprinkling in five digs.

Pacing John Jay College was Jack Nugent, as he tied Medgar's Perez for the match-high of 10 kills (10-1-19, .474) while also contributing three block assists. Kyle Barriffe Johnson recorded eight kills, hitting .636 (8-1-11) while adding a pair of service aces. Jeferson Avila finished with seven kills, two assists, and a pair of digs, and Alex Bridgelall and Maxwell Law piled 14 and 11 helpers, respectively.

John Jay raced out to an early 9-3 advantage in the first set after an attack error by Perez. The Bloodhounds used that momentum to put together an 11-6 run, catapulting to a commanding 20-9 edge following Bridgelall's ace.

Medgar Evers refused to go quietly in the opener, scoring four consecutive points, thanks to a kill by Perez, an attack error by Stephen De Stefani, an ace by Romeo, and an attack error by Avila. That made it 20-13 in favor of the visitors. Unfortunately for Medgar Evers, it wouldn't get any closer than seven points down, as the Bloodhounds held off the Cougars for a 25-17 victory in the first.

John Jay held a modest 10-8 advantage to open the second set, but the Bloodhounds then exploded,  staging a 10-1 run to increase their advantage to 20-9, the same lead they had at one point during the opening set. John Jay then closed things out with ease, outscoring the hosts 5-2 after that to take a commanding 2-0 edge in sets.

The Cougars kept pace with the Bloodhounds in the third set. Medgar Evers, trailing 15-13, rallied for three consecutive points, courtesy of a Sebastian Rodriguez service error, a service ace by Abreu, and a kill by Kelcity Blacky. The squads then alternated the ensuing pair of points, before John Jay notched three straight points to snatch a 19-17 edge.

Later, with the Bloodhounds holding on to the slimmest of leads, a 22-21 edge, John Jay would close things by scoring the final three points, thanks to a service error by Isaac Akindipe, a kill by Rodriguez, and an attack error by Blacky.

John Jay put forth a very efficient evening, hitting .325 for the match (35-10-77), while the Cougars hit .000 (23-23-79). The teams were deadlocked in digs with 26 apiece, and the Bloodhounds registered seven service aces, while the Cougars notched four.

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Thursday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the Hunter Sportsplex for a CUNYAC battle with the Hawks. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
