NCAA officially recognizes Sheily Quezada as Division III champion in blocks per game

The National Collegiate Athletic Association officially recognized Medgar Evers College women's basketball player Sheily Quezada as the statistical champion for blocked shots per game earlier in the week. During the 2022-2023 season, over the course of 23 games, Quezada averaged 4.3 blocks per contest. Following the announcement of the recognition, Head Coach Rodney Carr spoke about his standout.

"Sheily Quezada is an exceptional basketball player, and she represented our program sensationally last season," Carr said. "Last summer when we brought her in, we knew she had the potential to be a dynamic player on both ends of the court, and she proved us right, leading our offensive attack, while prospering defensively. For her to lead the nation in blocks per game, while also tying for the Division III lead in blocked shots total, it's an incredible feat for her. We're very proud."

In addition to Quezada's 4.3 swatted shots per contest, she also tied Haverford's Cortlyn Morris for the NCAA Division III lead in blocked shots, as they both swatted 102. Quezada needed just 23 games to accomplish the feat, while Morris did it in 26.

The 5'7 Brooklyn native's season-high for blocked shots in a game was eight, a feat she accomplished three times, all against CUNYAC opponents (CCNY twice, and John Jay). She also totaled seven blocks three times, against USMMA, Baruch, and Lehman.

Despite being just a freshman, Quezada is already second on Medgar Evers' all-time blocks list for her career. She sits just 10 blocks shy of surpassing the school's all-time record holder Shauntelle Nelson, who blocked 111 shots over a four year tenure as a Cougar (2005-2009). Quezada could stand to break that record during the early stages of the 2023-2024 season.
